    Recommend me a powder/load for a .223

Stevens action with a 1-12 26" criterion. Looking to shoot 50gr vmax or similar.

Need a recommendation on powder (need to order some possibly) and a load.
    I currently have:
RL 15 and 22 (use the 15 in my .308)
    4350
    H4831
    H414

Retumbo, ramshot hunter, and reamshot mag. I'm sure these are no help

All the powders you have listed are way to slow. The only possible one is Re15. The 223 with light bullets I find that N133, h322, and h335 work the best. My pick would be N133. IMR 8208XBR is reported to be the new go to powder in 223's.

    IMR 4198 at 21.5 grains
    Hornady 55g v-max
    CCI small rifle primers.

My go to load for .223

I load IMR 4895 with 50gr vmax's. Check a few load manuals, Use the primer you like. My load is right around 25.0 grains of IMR4895 with a benchrest primer.

30yrs of W748 and 50 gr pill then I found the 50g vmax when they came out and thats the only bullet I shoot now.
I have great results with H335/varget/blc2 as well & they are my backup powders.

+1 on varget and throw RL15 in there too. I prefer the 55gr V-Max myself.

over the last 2 months I have about 1000 rounds through 3 different 223's developing loads. H4198 was the most accurate and consistant powder that I tried and BLC2 came in 2nd.

Hi the best thing about varget is that no matter what bullet you use, 30-90gr you can allways run a full case and still get excellent results.

Hi if 4198 is your choice of propellant and a 50 grainer to top it off, then 24gr of powder will put you where you want to be.

Hi that load can't be that hot if the CUP is only 45900 when they have other loads all the way up 52000 CUP, like I have allways said and others agree with me hogdons max loads are very conservative and are probably written by lawyers and not reloaders.

".....and others agree with me hogdons max loads are very conservative and are probably written by lawyers and not reloaders."

and that's a pretty good reason not to suggest max loads that exceed the manufacturers recommendations and especially to someone about whom you know nothing as to their reloading experience and knowledge.

You may get by with 25.0 grns of 4198 in some brass and in some chambers, but I sure as Hell would not start there.

My best load with the 50 v-max is 26.5g Benchmark in a 22" Savage barrel. It gives excellent velocity and accuracy. With a 26" barrel you might get a little better with H4895 or Varget which are a little slower than Benchmark.

Accurate 2230 is very good. It meters very well also.

If you choose to not get any different powders the RL-15 at 25.0 to 25.5 with most any 55-60 grain bullet will likely shoot fine. 25.0 with the Sierra 69 or Hornady 68 HPBT's shoot very well out of several of mine. If you do choose to get a different powder H335 would get the nod in my opinion. It does have a big muzzle flash though. Accuracy is usually excellent with that powder in spite of the fireworks.

There are 3 powders worth using in the 223
    Win 748
    Win 748
    and Win 748
