    Who's loading for 260 rem?

Just built a 260 rem and wondering what you guy's are shooting. I shot some Berger 140's over Rl17 and got decent results. Tried varget and 123 mk's :-\. I have 140 amax's under imr 4350 and the 123's under some h100v to shoot on Saturday. I'm really lookin to push the 140's over 2800. I got it done with the rl17 but was getting a slight bulge above the case head but the face looked perfect?

Re: Who's loading for 260 rem?

I'm about 2 weeks ahead of you. I've been working on load development in my 6.5x55 Swede. The only bullets I've tried are the 140gr VLDs. They shot terribly the first time, so I found this article and followed the instructions. The ones that were loaded further from the lands were shooting 1/2" at 100 yards for me. Page one describes the problem and if you go down and click on page two it takes you to the solutions and how to load the VLDs for accuracy.

    http://www.longrangehunting.com/arti...accuracy-1.php

I hope I'm allowed to post articles from other forums like that. BTW, I was using H4350 when I got good groups. Here's a target picture with the bullets loaded 0.080" from the lands.

    I hope that helps.

How much has your velocity dropped seating so far off the lands? Are your loads light enough to increase charges. I'm concerned with velocities to keep the bullet sonic to 1K.

Re: Who's loading for 260 rem?

140gr PSP Rem, IMR 4350, CCI BR2 Primers, Rem Cases. I often shoot this load into the same hole @ 200yds & so far it's grouping better for me than the VLD's. RL 17 & RL 19 show promise & H 414 is ok for hunting loads. I intended to use the PSP's to break in the barrel & do load development, then switch to the VLD's but that's not what my barrel "had in mind". I started the VLD's touching the lands but didn't like the results, so I backed off .020" & got improvement. I think when I find the "sweet spot" I will be able to tune the VLD's in. Good Shooting :)

I'm not sure about velocity, I don't have access to a chrono yet. I have no pressure signs and plenty of case capacity left with my charge of 45gr of H4350, so after I get my OAL narrowed down a little better, I'll start increasing powder incrementally. From the ballistics charts that I've seen for the 140gr bullets, I don't think you'll have any trouble keeping it supersonic at 1000 yards.

I'm shooting the VLD's .010 off the lands for now. You should have no problem staying supersonic past 1000 with a 140, at 7000' elevation where I'm at they should stay super to 1800

What are you guys using for brass? I've got 7-08 winchester necked down but thinking of getting some LC match and necking down for some stronger brass.

Re: Who's loading for 260 rem?

I use Nosler brass for my 260 Savage, and RP brass for my 700 MTN LSS deer rifle.

I haven't found a really good load for my Savage yet during limited load development, but I've been using H4831SC along with 120/140gr AMax and 120gr Nosler BTs during development. Evidence thus far has shown it might prefer the 140 Amax to the 120, though it shoots the Noslers fairly well.

A load that replicates Remington Accutip factory ammo is the 120 NBT and 41.5gr H380; haven't chronographed it but I think its a fairly mild load, shoots pretty well out of both my 700 and my 26" 8 twist CBI barrel out to 200yd, and has proven terribly effective on whitetail.

I'm shooting 140 bergers and 120 amax over 43.5gr 4831SC and getting amazing results. Check out details at the link below. Are you located in Colorado as well?

What kind of velocity are you getting from those 140's. I'm out east of Colorado Springs, the windiest place on earth apparently.

Re: Who's loading for 260 rem?

No kidding. I was planing on some shooting out in the Yoder area today. Not even worth the trip. I bet even a pdog could blow away in this wind. I'd have to look and see what I had recorded for those loads for velocity but I think it was around 2770fps. It has been a while. They shot so well I wasn't all that concerned with how fast they were going.

I'm gonna do a .260 rem build as soon as I get the funds to complete it.

Did you get a muzzle brake on you 260 rem barrels?

Not sure if it needs one or not.

    Thanks

No brake required on the 260. I'm getting good results with 41.5g of rl17 and 140 bergers and h100v and 123 mk's. gonna shoot the mk's over rl17 and see what happens

Re: Who's loading for 260 rem?

I'm gonna call no brake on the .260. Recoil is lighter than .308win. Or at least I think so. Of course how heavy your rifle is makes a difference. Mine has to be in the 13-15lb range all decked out. I don't have issues with spotting shots but see a little movement. A brake might reduce that a little but not sure it would be worth the money to have it done.

Re: Who's loading for 260 rem?

I was having good luck with my mcgowen barrel running 43.5gr rl-17 behind a 130gr berger in Norma 260 brass w/ fed 215M primers. I worked this load up and wasn't seeing pressure issues, this was safe in mine. However, every rifle is different and wouldn't take this as a starting load. I was getting 5 under a dime at 100, and 4-5 under a quarter at 200 before it got reamed into an AI.

Re: Who's loading for 260 rem?

If you want to tune those vld's try seating off by .020 then .303 then.040,then.060,then.070 then all the way to .120 off the lands. The vlds like a fairly long jump as per gerger. And if you hunt, you go as far as .130.
Willing to give back for what the sport has done for me!

I'm shooting the VLD's .010 off and getting 3rd groups in the .4's. I loaded 10 into the lands and we'll see what happens
