Tightning bbl nut on first bbl swap??????

Ok, finally got my CBI bbl that i bought from Jim B. back from my gunsmith having it spiral fluted and the leade cut for 140 Berger VLD's...have a headspace gauge, set it up so it closes easy on the go gauge, won't come close on 2 layers of Scotch tape, can't close it on 1 layer. Take the single layer, it closes fine.....???? Sound right? Also, when i put the wrench on to tighten the bbl nut, should i clamp the bbl, or the action? If i dont hold both tight, the bbl turns , and messes the headspace up.....thanks for any help, hope to take it out on friday and fire some rounds before sending it off for nitriding and possibly a muzzle break....(muzzle brake first, i know) rsbhunter

Honestly you can just leave the go guage in there when you tighten the barrel. It can't move if it is left in there. Shouldn't hurt anything. Once you get it a little snug you can remove it if you like and finish the job.

I leave the Go gauge in while tightening & forget about the scotch tape. Then I cycle 50 new cases through the action, if they all feed through, I'm good to go.

Just curious...how many of you "break" in a new bbl, and is it the shoot 1, clean for 5/10 then shoot 3, clean....or? Thanks , rsbhunter

That is a topic of mixed opinions. I have broken in a few with the shoot-clean for 10 and then every 3 and then every 5 up to 50 or so, have a couple others that I just cleaned and then took and shot 20 or so and then cleaned again when I got home. Have not noticed any difference, in cleaning or accuracy.

    Just my $0.02.

Glad to hear it, post up some pics of the rigs you put em on if you get a chance. It would be nice to see how they turned out for you.

    Hello,

    Nice Rig you got there!

I'm new to the forum and considering a Savage build and want to ask what kind of stock you used on your build?

Did you use a blind magazine or a DBM?

    Is there a prefernece/reason for a DBM?

    Thanks!

Stock is the Bell & Carlson Medalist Tactical...made for the S.A. with a centerfeed magazine, and will handle at least up to a #5 contour.....this is the new centerfeed mag, i like it...feeds the AI case nicely.....thanks...rsbhunter

I have a love hate relationship with my DBM. I love the fact that I can take the mag out, load it up and put it in my pocket (for walking in to a stand hunting, sporting rifle matches etc...) then take it out, pop it in, rack the bolt and be good to go.

It does seem to limit your options for aftermarket stocks though if you have a DBM. There are stocks out there you can get and use. Just seems like not as many options.

Does that outside rifled barrel help any with accuracy?

Re: Tightning bbl nut on first bbl swap??????

I assume that when you say "outside rifled barrel" you are meaning the fluting on the outside of the barrel. And it does increase accuracy. However you have to be careful which direction you do the spiral fluted. If you do it clockwise it will work fine in the northern hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the souther hemisphere. However, you will never be able to take that rifle to South America and hope to win a match. That's why you don't see spiral fluted barrels on military sniper rifles. They may be called upon to shoot anywhere in the world.
