    Bolt won't close

I just received my new 10FCP McMillan and was going through the bolt insertion procedure and I can't get the bolt handle to drop to the fully cocked position (i.e. bolt handle drops fully down into slot on stock). The trigger will function, but the safety won't slide to the 'off' and 'safe' positions, just 'mid'. I found a thread that talks about mis alignment of the sear, any ideas?

Thanks, but so far none of the safety positions allow a closed bolt, is there some aother adjustment?

I'd say the front action bolt is too long and protrudes into the locking lug area and stops the bolt from closing.

Could be the front scope base screws too.

I'd loosen these screws and try again.

yep ,to long scerws will keep your bolt from closeing
your safety adj ,is prob. a plastic filled hole behind your trigger,
if your bolts are not to long ,back your safety adj. off a little

Good advice! I felt in the action and could feel the scope rail mounting screw, then checked w/a flashlight and there it was. The stock mounting screws are recessed and o.k.

I'll let you know how it works out.

    Thanks!

Perfect! I ground the second base screw from the front down a little, re loctited and presto, bolt closes and cycles. A little stiff, but I guess a few days at the range will loosen things up.

    Thanks again

if the one is to long, so is the mate to it that is bottomed out, pressing down hard on your barrel threads and not holding the base tight

and possibly marring the threads which would make the barrel extra tough to remove if you ever decide to do...

glad it was a simple fix for ya

Good advise!! It seem that the front screw over the barrel threads always needs to be shortened at least I have found that to be true on the 3 screw Target actions.

My EGW bases have come with 2 different length screws. 2 longer ones for the rear and 2 shorter ones for the front. Haven't had to shorten one yet. The Weaver 2-piece bases that I've used all came with the shorter screws as well.

I bought a Weaver one piece multi-slot base for my new Model 16 and the screws it came with were all the same length and too long for the front holes. I substituted shorter screws I had left over from another base and they worked well but the originals didn't work.
