    223 vs 22-250 for 600 yard target shooting ?

    .

Not giving any consideration to barrel life...

    Including wildcats...

What is the best 224 centerfire cartridge for 600 and 1,000 yard paper target shooting ?

Is there any reason to prefer 224 caliber over 6mm for this ?

Depends on what kind of paper...

NRA F-Class, F/TR is .223 or .308 only. Anything else puts you in F/Open class.

The 22/250 has been hands down my favorite factory chambered caliber of all time. The main problem with the 22/250 is the twist rate, you have to get a custom barrel to shoot the heavier bullets. If you going with a custom barrel you might as well go with a custom chamber like a 22BR. The only thing a 22/250 can do that a 22BR cant do is feed from most magazines. The 22BR can be loaded down to 223 specks, and hot like a efficient 22/250. The other problem is case cost; For the longest time it was hard to get good brass for a 22/250, now that Lapua, Nosler, and Norma are making it it is not so hard. Case cost is slightly better for the 22/250.

BC is a funny thing. The heavy 22 bullets have good BC's, but the numbers are still not as good as the heavy BC 6mm bullets. Anymore we drag race BC numbers, as if the higher number is better. My thought is the short period of time the bullet is in the air, the less it is affected by wind, with that said I like speed. I must say I am very impressed with the 20x47 Lapaua, but the barrel life is a consideration I have a hard time getting past. I guess it is truly all ones personal preference. I would say most people do what they do, because they emulate what the best shooters are doing.
