    savage model 12 fvss 223

Hey guys maybe i can pick some brains here. I bought a sav.12fvss. to build up and this is what i have so far. Choate stock, egw 20moa base, burris low rings, (dont hit me) BSA 6x24x44 scope because my bushy 4200 didnt have that kind of adj. to zero at 100. and the gun is a pretty good shooter. I hand load. I have confirmed a 1-9 barrel twist via marked cleaning rod. to the question: Has anyone shot 40grain vmaxs out of this particlular weapon with any kind of good results? I have loaded, 68hpbt hornadys, shot ok over varget and H322 loaded 52 hpbt sierras over H322 shot ok, loaded 52hpbt hornadys shot ok im not askin for a miricle out of a bone stock gun here just like some imputs if it possible. Best groups so far are 25grn varget with a 52 hornady seated at 2.234 oal. shot .564 @ 100 5 shot group Im gettin ready to start loading for my trip and was wondering if anyone had a good bullet with varget or H322 they could share? My rem. shoots either powder great so id like to just buy bulk one powder and bullet if it possible but def. the same powder so i get the same lot for each rifle. thanks in advance.

I also have the 26" 1-9" twist in 223 and mine seems to like RL15 and 55gr V-Max. It also has shown promise with a 55gr Hornady SP-SX and Varget. Varget also did pretty well with the V-Max, I had just made a switch to RL15 when varget got so scarce a couple years back and haven't switched back.

how does it stack up against the varget on velocities and cleanlyness? varget is fast powder and i like the stick powder better, i dont mind backin loads off a tad because in south dakota in the sun its just a smart move. i dont like H335 ball powder i hate the way it clings to crap and is hard to work with what kind of seating depth are you using and what kinda 100 yard groups?

Hi my go to load for 223 is 40 vmax's with 26gr of h4198, that's good for over 3800 fps with excellent grouping, needless to say what it does to the recipeant heck that speed is 22-250 territory.

+1 on the h4198. most accurate powder in my AR 1:9 with 50gr vmax and 55gr hornady soft points. BLC-2 shot great also in mine and its cheaper than most powders.

Well after boots posted the RL-15 i got curious and went to lookin a round on the web at alliant powders and found they have a new powder varmint.... check out the velocity on it. its doin about what you described i didnt know if 40s would work in my 1=9 I loaded them last year in my r700 (1-12)an varget at 26 and they grouped great not as good as a 52 sierra and 22gns or h322 coyote load. but .5 all day nonthe less. I am looking to load about 3k of these for the trip and would like to get a powder that someone has tried in hot and cold climates basically a one size fits all round for coyote and pd. or at least the same powder in 2 diff. bullet weights. The 50-55 v and a max's are from what i have read very accurate. I thank you guys for the info if you shoot a sav. 12 in 223 what are your load specs oals and such maybe speed things up a bit. Im gonna try to get a lbs of rl-15 and that varmint powder if its climate safe. i use BR cci small ignition switches. anything else is very much appreciated.

Re: savage model 12 fvss 223

the RL15 and Varget both are pretty clean for me, I have run Varget in several calibers and it is very resistant to the temp changes. I run the same load in my 308 12FV all year long from 95* summer days to 10* deer hunting in January.

RL 15 is supposed to be resistant as well, but I was using it in my 22-250 and 223 and I changed my 223 load in Novemeber (trying the 55gr SP-SX and the V-Max, before that I was running the Seirra 55gr Spitzer) and I removed the barrel on my 22-250 for my 243AI back in August, So I can't say that it is temp resistant for sure since my loads changed between summer and winter. I will say RL15 has been the most accurate for me in the 22-250 and equal to Varget in the 223, but I think I can tweak a little more out of it. I need to play with my OAL a bit.

Has anyone tried W748 in their .223. I have good luck with it. I know it's suppose to be heat sensitive. I always keep the loaded rounds in the shade out in the field. I haven't seen any signs of presure.
