    260 Rem. Barrel Length???

What is the shortest you could cut a 260 Remington barrel and still have good velocity for a hunting rifle?
I am looking at this for a light weight hunting rifle. Just wondering what length of barrel I could get away with.

How far must it shoot? What twist? What grain bullet? Look at the model 11 lwh .260. blue

I have found that 30-inch barrels work almost as good as 32-inch barrels.

That is a slippery slope - next thing you know someone will say 28" is almost as good as 30" and pretty soon we will see folks running around with 20" barreled guns and calling them rifles!

What's the BAFT minimum?....16"?? I think that's right....but double check it. So, I'd say cut that puppy down to 16.75".....put a round crown on it and go shoot stuff.

    :D ;D

    All good questions.
I would say 400 is tops, as far as distance. Twist is 1-9", and I am looking to shoot the Barnes Tipped TSX 120gr., I will just be re-barreling.

Myths, all myths. the .260 would never work in a 15 inch striker!

Would stay away from the 260 Rem for general hunting. Much too undergunned.

Now a 6.5 x 55 Swede with 160 grainers will work on most anything.

    Hammer,
How come you think that the 260 would not be enough gun for hunting?
It would be mainly a deer rifle but was thinking it would be sufficient for the occasional elk hunt. I don't want to make a bad choice in caliber though as I could go any way at this point.

    Thanks,

    Excerpt from an article I was reading;

I think the .260 makes good sense. It offers superior performance than the, popular in Europe, 6.5x55mm Swede in a shorter action.

    Swede 140 grain @ 2651 ft/s , 2185 lbs

    vs.

    .260 140 grain @ 2750 ft/s, 2351 lbs.

But why would one be shooting 140 grain bullets when 160 grain bullets are available ?

You need an 1 in 8 twist to stabilize the heavies.( might do it but an 8 twist is very common.

    Re: 260 Rem. Barrel Length???

First of all I like a 24 inch barrel on any rifle I am going to shoot over 300 yards down range! You will lose around 35 feet per second for every inch you chop off your barrel as a rule of thumb.

I shoot a .264/05 using (6.5/06 and I hate metrics) using a 100 grn( 3300fps) on coyotes and 140 grn (2800fps) on deer, 160 grn at (2750fps) would be good for moose or elk under 250 yards. Now the 260 Remington can drive that 160 grain at up to 2600fps and thats good to go for those bigger animals you betcha.

Daisy, hammers just pulling your chain. There are alot of ways to go with the 6.5, if you plan to stay with the 120gr then a 1/9 will work fine. If you might want to try a 140gr down the road then as stated above the 1/8 will give you the ability to do both.

I have two .260's at the moment, a 22" and a 24" both in 1/8 and both shoot good with light weight or heavier weight bullets. I will either cut down the 22" to 18" or 20" for my brush gun or perhaps get a .260 lwh, i simply will wait until i see some reviews of the lwh before deciding. Either way the .260 will do fine for you. blue

No problems whatsoever with the 260 and a 22" barrel.

".....every inch you chop off your barrel"

That makes me decidedly uncomfortable just thinking about it.

We landed on the moon. ;D

Really though, if you can kill a deer with a 6" barrel at 50yds, you can surely kill a deer with a 20" barrel from a 260. Yes, even out to 400yds. Just punch in some numbers and you will find your answer: http://www.biggameinfo.com/index.asp...2fbalcalc.ascx
Example: using 140grn Amax at just 2600fps, your energy is almost 1300ft/lbs @400yds. That will kill any deer!

    Re: 260 Rem. Barrel Length???

I used a 24 inch barrel chambered in .260 with a 140 AMAX to kill 3 deer in about 40 minutes this past season. I have shot this rifle to 600 yards at targets and done well.
