If not already doing so, try installing your magazine with the bolt open and see if there is any difference.
I've had the same issue with my #10 Predator Hunter in .223 since I bought it. The magazine is very difficult to install all the way. I mean you really gotta push it up in there, and it helps to start the rear end first then snap the front up in. Even then, it's 50/50 if the bolt will ride over the round and fail to chamber.
The other night I watched carefully to be sure the first round chambered. After shooting a coyote, I worked the bolt just in case I needed another round. When I was done hunting and went to unload my rifle, I discovered that the chamber was empty! >
Has anyone else experienced this? I spoke to Savage who is sending me a mag follower and spring, but also said that if that doesn't work, I need to send the gun in. I hate to do that for what appears to be a simple problem. Is there anything else I can try before having to send it in?
Thanks for any advice.

Man and man's best friend. Still looking at the green side of sod
I always do that just to witness the first round going in.
