New and need help ???

My question is My wife deer hunts with a Savage model 111 in 7mm Mag with the blind magizine. Do to some medical problems she found out at the range she can no longer handle the recoil of the 7mag. So I wanna put a new barrel on it to a smaller caliber. Can I use that 7mm long action for say a 308 win or would I be better off with a 30-06. And what all would have to be changed? I know the barrel, bolt face and the mag well. Anything else? And also how would an action that long feed a short 308 win?

sounds like you need a 25-06 for wifey. it would be better suited for the long action and alot less recoil. or you could have the barrel rechambered for a 7-08. but to answer the question i think all you would have to change is the bolt face and barrel

I don't think a magnum mag box is going to feed 308, 7mm/08 or 25-06. Is it one of the older staggerfeed Savages or a newer centerfeed?

that mag box is gonna be kinda wide, think maybe a wsm of some kind would feed?

even if you could, it would prolly be cheaper just to buy another rifle

By the time you buy a bolt, mag box, and barrel, you would have spent enough money to buy a Stevens in .243 or .25-06. Do you own an action wrench and barrel nut wrench- that's another hundred bucks. Unless you are already set up to swap barrels, you will go backwards on this deal. I know you can sell the 7mag barrel and bolt head here and get some money back. I would trade the rifle in or sell it and get a new rifle.

The feed lips could be worked enough to get o6 rounds or its cousins to feed. If your a reloader and like 7mm there is the .280, but I do not know how much recoil reduction your Wife needs to be comfortable.
There are also some very good brakes available to tame the 7mag.
