What mag box and bolt head for .308 on long action

What mag box and bolt head do i need for a .308 on long action. Do i want the long action .308 box and 30-06 bolt head or do i want the 30-06 box and bolt head. My goal is to be able to load berger 210 into the lands and have them fit in the magazine, which my short action wont allow. This is for a long action stagger feed.

If the goal is a longer COL, the .308 box won't cut it. You'll need the 30-06 length magazine.

You may have to tweek the feed lips on the 06 mag to feed the shorter 308. You won't know until you try and you may get lucky and it feeds w/o any problem.

Savage hasn't offered a long action 308 in a very long time, and when they did it was on a 1st generation short action, (Also known as a "J" series.) which shares little with the second (Staggard feed.) and third generation (Centerfeed.) actions. It would take a bit of fabrication to fit a short action 308 box to a long action, and it is the wrong direction to go in your case. I have found that the Stagard feed box will feed 243's without modification, but 22/250 rem needs a bit of tweeking to feed. Many have gotten 308s to feed without modification. I have never tried it with a centerfeed magazine, but I would think that it would work better.

The 30/06 has a .473 case head so any rounds with that same dimension will work, such as 22-250, 308, 6BR, and many many more. You can not use the short action bolt head off of a 308 on a long action because will increase firing pin protrusion to an unsafe length.
