    Aftermarket Barrel

New to the site, there is a ton of good info here.

I'm looking to build a .308 bull barrel rifle. I was hoping that you guys could point me in the right direction for a barrel manufacturer. I would like to get the best accuracy possible for around $300 (+/- 50 bucks if its worth it).

Is it cheaper to get a prefit and assemble it myself as opposed to a blank and having a smith fit it?
I also do not want to wait 18 weeks so someone with a turnaround of about 8 weeks would be best

I am looking for a 24" bull barrel with 1" at the muzzle finished in black like the model 10 actions.

    Thanks in advance.

    Ditto on Jim, great guy.

But I'd suggest not getting a bull contour barrel. I have 26" Shilen Bull barrel and it's very heavy.

I'd suggest a varmint. A thicker barrel doesn't make it shoot any more accurate.

    Re: Aftermarket Barrel

What do you want to do with this rifle? If hunting is your purpose, a barrel that is 1" diameter at the muzzle is VERY heavy, wouldn't suggest trying to walk around with that rifle. If you still want it in a bull, I would suggest fluting your barrel, to at least cut a little down on the weight.

On the other hand, a varmint contour rifle is much more manageable to walk around with.
They who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

+1 on McGowen barrels. Good customer service and fast. I got my barrel in 31 days.
    Shilen took 5 months.

As far as I know both of these are prefits, so no they dont need to be installed by a gunsmith.
