    savage long action/centerfeed

Do you guys think it will work for now?It is a 22" barrel/sporter.I set the headspace slightly tighter than factory and want to know how you guys feel about shooting the sierra 120's out of it.I understand that the 140's wont shoot due to the 1 in 11.5 twist.I dont care about the heavies, just for ground hogs anyways.

I was assuming he has a 7mm something since he mentioned 120gr and 140 gr bullets, with an 11.5 twist.

I mentioned 7-08 just cause I thought a 7mag or 7wsm wouldnt be used for groundhogs....but I have used a 308 so I guess it could be one of those also....LOL

Just not sure what the real question is here?

Yes it is a 7mm-08.I screwed it together saturday and the centerfeed mag feeds more relialbe then the stagger feed.I found out with a long action you can make anything you want out of it from the .308 class on up. I am using the 1 in 11 1/2 for a test tube to see if I like it in a rifle(have an encore pistol in it) and then I am going to jim briggs for a shilen or mcgowen at a later date and a stock and trigger upgrade.

I built my 7mm/08 on a long action a few years ago. I liked the ability to seat bullets out as far as I wanted in a 30-06 mag box.

If you want a 7MM in the 7-08 class in a long action you would be just as well of with a 7x57 Mauser. Ballistics are virtualy the same and you have a cartridge made for the long action. I rebarreled a 110 in 7x57 and it is the proverbial tack driver. in the Savage plastic stock, which does not seem to be a problem as I dont use a bipod.

Why would you set the headspace tighter ??

The proper headspace is what lets the case expend and what lets the bullet fly.

If you dont have go/nogo gages get some.

A 7mm-08 on a long action is fine.

I did use headspace gages. What I meant was I set it about a .001 tighter than I normally do.The cases chamber with ease and with no go gage it doesnt. Believe me there is plenty of slop in a stock sammi chamber.

Don't see any problem at all with the 7-08 on a long action. However, I don't even understand why Savage/Stevens went to a 11.5 twist.

WBM...a big +1 on that.....for a company that just keeps bringing out fantastic weapon/caliber combos, and configurations that no other company has the brains to...the twist rate on the 7/08 really has me stumped???? rsbhunter
