Long action vs short action bolt head

I have a short action Savage 10 rifle in .223, a long action bolt head (.473), a front baffle, and the new magazine parts. I'd like to install a 7mm-08 barrel.

Do I just need to shorten the long action bolt head on the part where it enters the bolt (behind the hole for the retaining pin) to be able to use it or should I look for a short action bolt head?

I'd look for short action bolt head. You could put a wtb or wtt in the want ads.

Is there a difference in bolt heads?

Yes there is a difference. Look in the FAQ section at top under Bolthead Configuration, It show it better than I could explain.
