    Savage 110c action

Good day, this is my first post on this forum.
I hail from South Africa and enjoy hunting! I own a 270 rifle built on a Savage 110c action married to a Anschutz barrel. This was made as a joint Savage/Anschutz venture in the '70s. My barrel has come ot the end of its life and I am toying with ideas. I want to build a 300H&H and was wondering if the 110c action is strong enough. It is certainly long enough to take a 300H&H cartridge. I measured to action today and it is fully 5mm longer than the standard 300H&H cartridge. Can I build a 300H&H on this action?

Sure, that would be an easy swap. The length is the only worry.

Gear grinder - is it really as easy as that? I told a gunsmith here what my idea was and he said it was not possible. He said the action was too short and not strong enough. I do not mean to question your reply but will I be able to shoot 200gr bullets at 2800 fps as the Lyman reloading manual suggests? I would love for you to be right and save myself a whole lot of money. Please put my mind at ease.

The action is too short but it is strong enough.
You need a savage H+H action that is set up for 3.6" long shells.
    You could single feed it.

You could build a 300 win mag on it.
Basically any short or long action cartridge.
The max COl for a long action is about 3.4" that will fit in a savage magazine.

I have one long action, I have had set up as a 308, 338-06, 338-284, 375 ruger and 458 win mag.

Now it lives as a 338 winmag/270 win switch barrel.

If you are wanting 300 H&H performance, I just read an article on the "Super Thirty" comparing it to the 300 WSM. the author was showing that case capacity of the two was nearly identical and testing with almost a dozen different bullets showed that velocity only really varied by about 15 FPS between the two. I understand the want to build a "Super Thirty" in your reigon of the world due to the availability of ammo over there. Your action should be plenty strong enough for either.

    Thanks Tammons,
The action I have measures fully 3 5/8 inches but the magazine only measures 3 3/8 inches so a standard 300H&H would not fit! What a pity!

I know the .300 H&H has a lot of nostalgia attached to it especially in So. Afrika, but on a practical note, any of the current .30 cal magnums will equal the old H&H and fit in the Savage long action. There are a lot of good options other than a .30 but ammo availablitiy there would be a problem. Good luck with whatever you decide.

El Lobo - funny you should say that because no. 2 on my list is the 7x64 and that would fit right in with my current action and we all know the killing ability of the 7mm rifles and you get bullets up to 170gr. If I build a 300 it will only be a 300H&H for reasons too many to list here other than I think it is better than the modern 300s in a number of ways - esp recoil and the ability to throw 200gr bullets fast and far. I actually love the 270 and a very real option is to simply rebarrel the rifle with another 270 and carry on. I do, however, feel the 130gr bullets are a bit light on those windy days with the long shots.

    Re: Savage 110c action

I guess I should have explained more.

    There are several options.

Run it single shot, with or without a single shot follower.

Modify the magazine/action to allow longer OAL.

Run the bullets seated deeper in the case. Be careful, you have to start with a low load and work up since the bullet will be taking up powder capacity. You might not be able to get 2800fps.
