    Recommend load for a 308 w/28" 1/10 twist barrel

What is your recommended load for the above Shilen barrel on a FCP 308?

Work up to your OWN load....but we use Win 760 with 168 gr AMax. In fact, shot some more of this today....1" and under groups at 300 yards.

I have the same shilen barrel in 30 inch. 46 of varget with 168 berger vlds worked best for me. I found that bergers seem to like being up close and personal to the lans.

Planning on it, looking for a starting point!

Thanks for both opinions and looking forward to maybe more!

Every .308 that I have owned liked 168gr SMKs and Varget.

Re: Recommend load for a 308 w/28" 1/10 twist barrel

Well, suprisingly 168's are the best group so far. I say this as I have a FCP308 24" barrel that loves 175gr?

I am going to try some 190's as soon as I find them, just to see! Yesterday I put 3 shots almost in the same hole with the fourth shot touching the other three! The 175's avg around the .300.

Re: Recommend load for a 308 w/28" 1/10 twist barrel

Here's another good load. Pretty good groups in spite of the wind! Sorry about the lousy rifle picture, I had to leave the shooting bag on the bench to keep everything from blowing away! My 10FLP likes the Sierra 175 gr HPBT (or Nosler) best but the 168 gr Nosler HPBT isn't bad either. From my M1A this load goes 2580 fps but I haven't checked it in my 10FLP yet.

    Bullet: Nosler 168 gr. HPBT
    Powder: Hodgdon H4895 41.0 grs.
    Primer: Winchester Large Rifle
    Case: IMI Match
LOAL: 2.810 (2.241 with Stoney Point Gage)

Worst thing is I had a bughole going on one group - then on the 5th shot I blew it...

Here's how the 175 gr. load shoots.

Re: Recommend load for a 308 w/28" 1/10 twist barrel

We just put a 26" Shilen 1:10 on a friends BTVS. His break loads produced a 0.3" group with 175 Berger Hunting VLDs on the high end with IMR4895, Fed 210M, and Laupa brass. Never shot a group larger than 1" at 100 yds with the load development. He didn't get to finish shooting at the loads we made up, but the initial test point that we are definitely on the right track. The 26" factory varmint barrelled Savage, with well over 2500 rounds down the tube, clocks 168 gr AMax's at 28xx with Win 760. Holds 1.25" groups at 300 yards IN the wind.

I had good groups with Varget but great groups with 4064. May have to try some 4895.

Re: Recommend load for a 308 w/28" 1/10 twist barrel

100 yard load .5" groups or better

    110 Sierra JHP or 110 V-max
    46.0 gr Varget or 45.0 RE-15
    CCI BR2 or Fed 210m
    Lapua brass or Win BHA
    2.650" COAL for the Sierra / 2.750" COAL V-max

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

F-class load should give 3" groups at 600:

    43.0 gr Varget
    Fed 210m primer
    Lapua brass
    168 gr A-Max or SMK
    2.805" COAL

    or

    42.0 gr RE-15
    Fed 210m primer
    Lapua brass
    168 A-Max or SMK
    2.805" COAL

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you really want to reach out:

    44.5 gr Varget
    Fed 210m primer
    Win, BHA brass
    175 SMK
    2.810" COAL

What about a good 600yd powder load for SMK 175gr HPBT Match.

And if I can't find Varget or RL-15, what's the next best powder?

pbcaster45 , How much H4895 did you use with the 175grns?

Here's how the 175 gr. load shoots.

H4895, IMR-4064 and IMR-4895 usually work well in the .308. I'm sure there are other good options as well. I have had good luck with H4895 myself.

    Dennis,

The Sierra 175 gr load used Hogdon Varget, it was posted just a few lines up, but here it is again.

Bullet: Sierra 175 gr. HPBT Match
    Powder: Hodgdon Varget 43.5 grs.
    Primer: Federal 210
    Case: Lapua (Unfired)
LOAL: 2.805 (2.230 Base to Ogive with Stoney Point)

    pbcaster45,

I know your Base to Ogive is 2.230

Is your bullet on the lands, in the lands, or off the lands by 0.0** ??

Re: Recommend load for a 308 w/28" 1/10 twist barrel

My 308 McGowen liked 43.5gr Varget and 168smk's at .015" off the lands. Velocity was 2695fps out of the 26" barrel.

It shot like a dream right from the start and still does. I shot a best of a .212 with it, and shot many groups in the .2's, but averaged in the mid to high .3's with it. Unfortunately for me Blue Avenger has that barrel now :'( as I had to make room for a similar Mcgowen 308 barrel in a 24" light varmint contour.

Re: Recommend load for a 308 w/28" 1/10 twist barrel

That's nothing compared to the throat on my Remington 700 SPS (which is getting a new Kreiger). I've seated as close as 0.018 but it shoots just as well with the longer jump. I thought maybe it was just a characteristic of Sierra Match Bullets but Nosler HPBTs are just as accurate at the same COAL.

You know, that Remington is a nice rifle but I just don't understand anymore why folks brag on them so much. Sure, they are great rifles after being tuned by a gunsmith but my 10FLP will shoot rings around my 700 and it's box stock! Yeah, it's got a McMillan now but even with the original tupperware stock it was a nail driver!
