    Shortening a factory barrel?

I'd like to shorten it to 18.5 or 19".
Anyone see any problem with this accuracy wise.
Presently will print dime size groups at 100yds & maybe an 1"at 200yds
270win cartridge 54grains 4350& 130gr sierras game getters max or 200 yd shots.

Large case capacity + medium-slow powder - several inches of barrel = big velocity loss and BIG increase in muzzle flash and blast. Might as well switch to a short action caliber where the velocity loss per inch of decrease in barrel will be less.

If the cut and crown are done correctly then it should be at least as accurate as it now. Shorter barrels do not hurt accuracy unless you are talking 1000 yard shooting. Then it is not the barrel that is the issue, it is the slower velocity allowing the bullet to hang out in the wind longer and get moved around.

    I have owned 15"-19" barrels in .223, .22-250, 308, .243, 6.5-284, 30-06 and 300 WSM that shot under inch and almost all under 1/2".
    More shooting, less typing.

You are going to lose 120 FPS with a 130 grainer going from 22" to 19" in a 270 according to quickload but probably not a big deal for 200 yards.

I also prefer about 19" barrels.
Seems to be about the right length for me.

Now every time I look at a 24" barrel it looks like a cannon.

Yes it should be as accurate as it is now.

I forget where I read this, probably here about the guys at snipers hide tried an experiment, decided to hack off barrels and shoot them with no crown, dent and ding the end of the barrel, all sorts of abuse, and for the most part it did not affect grouping that much. Not like you think it would but it would move the POI.

With my proposed load of 130 GK over RL17 it is showing 99.8% powder burn for a 19" barrel.
