BUILD JUST STARTING

Just found my donor rifle its a 110 in 7mm mag! now I need to get it apart ??? Do I need a barrel vise or can I get the barrel off with just the barrel nut wrench and an action wrench? Do I even need the action wrench? I know SSS has the barrel nut wrench but not the other two Midway sells all three tools. I just don't know which ones I need.

This one:

Wheeler Engineering Action Wrench #2 Remington 700, Savage 110

And a nut wrench for your particular nut, square tooth, round tooth, no tooth.

I put the action wrench on and set the action on the floor. Put on the nut wrench and press down. Works for me every time. NOTE: SOME Savages require persuasion.

McRee Precision makes THE best barrel nut wrench. Jim at Northlander sells them or you can buy direct from McRee. ....and by the way, the action wrenches are the cheapest price as well. Who woulda thunk....the best AND the least expensive???!!!!!

If you really think about it though, it would not be a hard part to machine. Drill a hole, split, machine notch, and viola! action wrench is made.

The problem is having the mill to do it! Definately looks like you did some nice work on it though!

This won't impress the switch barrel pros, but here is my el-cheapo homemade barrel vise.
6"x6x4" oak block drilled thru with a 3/4" bit, then 2/3rds thru with a 13/16", then 1/3rd with a 7/8".
The block was cut with a thin blade saw, and the steps between the hole sizes blended to a smooth taper with a flapper wheel on a die grinder.
The pressure was applied with 2-1" allthreads spanned by 3"x4"x1/2" angle iron, and bolted thru to a 1/2" plate work table top.
I had been applying Kroil to the nut several times over a few days. I then clamped the barrel in the vise with about a 1/8" gap between the blocks and tightened the bolts quite firmly with a 3/4' drive socket wrench. At this time I heated the barrel nut with a heat gun, put some pressure on the Wheeler wrench, and smacked it with a 4 lb hammer. It worked!

It's not NEAR as pretty as Blue's, but it works.

Here's my action wrench clamped in my bench vise, and the barrel nut wrench sitting on the barrel nut. I've never had a single issue or problem with this setup.

For taking off a factory barrel/nut, I put the wrench on like this:

And whack it with a soft face dead blow mallet. They always come off for me this way, and the first time too.

Thanks for all the replies and with pic's too. I just ordered the wheeler action and barrel nut wrenches can't wait to get them in.

When the action wrench comes in, before you use it, you will have to grind a notch for the keyway in the the lug channel. If you look closely at the picture I posted, you can see the notch I ground in mine. As far as I know, you still have to do this on the Wheeler wrench. It's not a big deal, but just FYI.

--EDIT-- I used my dremel tool to notch mine. --EDIT

Also, what I do before I put the wrench on the action, I wrap the front of the action in scotch tape, all the way around. It sounds weird, but it will keep the wrench from marring the finish on either a blued, or a stainless action. Works like a champ. You just can't really see that detail in my pics.

Yep, I had to grind the notch for the two of mine also.

And I too also wrap the action in tape(usually painters masking tape) before installing the action wrench so it dont mess up the finish on the action.

And thats why I keep coomming back here I never would have thought to put tape on the action prior to installing the wrench. thanks for the heads up on the notch too.
