    RL-17?

I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to application of different powders (Varget, W760 and H380 are what I've used in 223/22-250/243/260/270/30-06).

I recently picked up some Reloader 17 as it seems to be the go-to powder for 260 shooters, but after seeing the 25-06 thread I'm curious if folks have had good success using it with other calibers, specifically 270 & 30-06 (especially from 22" barrels).

    Re: RL-17?

I have some, and have not used it yet, but it was designed for the Short Mags. People are using it with great success in the .308 using very heavy bullets for long range target shooting. The results have been that people are getting higher velocities, but accuracy has suffered in some of their RL17 loads with the higher velocities. I haven't seen anyone using it with the .270, or 30-06, but someone has done it I'm sure. Do a google search, and then verify it from other sources, as I have seen people make mistakes through typing with fat thumbs. I look forward to trying it myself in a number of calibers.

just got back from coyote hunting and killed one at 426yds with a 25-06 75gr vmax and 57.5gr of rl17, folded him like a piece of paper.

    Re: RL-17?

I think some guys are running 208 amaxes over RL17 in 30-06 over at snipers hide.
Do a search there for RL17 and threads will show up.

I have yet to load 30-06 with RL17.

Alliant has loads for both. The 30-06 listed loads are pretty weak and IMO you can push them a lot more with RL17.
The guys over at SH are getting about 2700 +

Dont know why Alliant is running all these loads at 3.25

Wt. Bullet Powder Manufacturer Powder Charge Velocity (FPS)
    150 Speer BTSP Alliant RL-17 58.0 3006
    Remarks: Min OAL: 3.250

    200 Speer SP Alliant RL-17 51.0 2552
    Remarks: Min OAL: 3.250

(Just as a note, I am getting 2500 FPS with 208 amaxes over RL17 in my 308 with a 19" barrel, so this is a pretty weak load for 30-06 with a 24" barrel. The guys over at SH are getting about 2700 + with 208 gr amaxes with a max load at around 53 gr at 3.4 col)

Be sure to work up these loads.

I tried RE17 in my 6x47Lapua, and found it was not the right powder for it. There has been others that have come to the same conclusion. The powder does excel in a 20x47 Lapua.

    Re: RL-17?

Interesting that more of an overbore 20-47 works but a 6-47 doesnt.

The 6-47 might do better with lighter bullets.

The barnes laod for 80 gr TTSX bullets is a RL17 load.

    Re: RL-17?

I tested it in a 22-6mm Rem with 60g Nosler BT's. Great velocity and some pretty good groups for a first test. I have since sold the rifle but it was definitely something I would have continued to work with.

Currently have test loads ready for a 6mm Rem and 70g Noslers using R-17. Just waiting for a decent day to get out and shoot 'em.

25-06 75gr vmax 57.5gr RL17 = 1/4" group at 3975fps. 100gr noslerBT 53grRL17= .4" group at 3530fps. love this powder so far, but this was in cold weather and havnt shot it in the warm.

    Re: RL-17?

Those look like hot loads so you may want to check them out in hot weather.

I got higher pressure with 308 loads in hot weather.
About .3gr +- difference where I got extractor marks.

    Re: RL-17?

the 75 vmax is a little warm and getting a little cratering but not too bad. im sure theyll warm up as the temp does so im gonna drop half grain and check it. the 100gr is fine.

    Re: RL-17?

I shoot a .260 AI for F class comp. On my 2nd bbl I decided to stray from my typical load w/ a 139 Lapua and H4831SC. My buddy and I split a case of 10- 1 lb jugs. I used some of 1 of the jugs for load dev. and found that I got slightly higher velocites (50-75fps), but my barrel/ chamber/ rig liked the H3831SC slightly better in terms of accuracy. Very slight difference at 300yds in group size, but enough to make me think that at 600 and 1000yds, it might make sense to stick with what I have used for 3 years now. It does what they said it would , increase velocity. In my bbl though- 28" Shilen Sel. Match, 8 twist, It was slightly more accurate with H4831sc.
