What is the twist rate for a 99E .308?

    Title says it all.

I'm guessing at 1 in 9.5" or 1 in 10" based on how far it takes my wire brush to make one turn as I shove it down the barrel, but i was hoping for something a bit more definitive. Does anyone here know for sure?

Nope but I would be shocked if it wasn't 10" - don't know of any "non custom" US made 308's that aren't 10".

    Why?

Not going to be able to shoot 240 grain VLD's out of a 99 anyway...

According to the stability calculator at the bottom of this web page, http://www.jbmballistics.com/ballist...culators.shtml, the 1 in 12 twist barrel on my Rem. 700 .308 won't stabilize the longer-for-their-weight solid copper bullets that we in the great state of California are required to use in some areas, whereas a 1 in 10 twist is suppose to work quite nicely. Yet another reason to love my 99.

Savage 99E rolled onto the line in late 1959.

    The post-mil 99's in 300 Sav and 308 all used a 1-12" twist.

According to the Savage Arms factory catalogs thats what it says.

Slug the bore and see how many revolutions you get.

Don't mean to offend, my mama kept me home when they were handing out the book on how to be tactful, it's just that I ran a brush down the bore and counted the revolutions. Out of six or eight tries I got anywhere from 9.5 to 10.5. Obviously getting different counts each time means I wasn't that accurate, I'm just surprised I was off by that much.

Anyhoo, I figured if anybody knew it would be you, I just wanted to double check before I start throwing solid copper rounds down range.

Whats the serial range of the gun, I'll check again, maybe they changed the twist rate at some point in manufacture but I couldn't see a reason for it.
