6 BR Norma Load

This is my 1st 6BR, and my 1st aftermarket barrel. I'm going to attemp to use 105 berger VLD's over H4895 with CCI BR4 primers. Anybody try this? I have a 8 lbs jug of 4895 I need to use up. Then I may switch to varget or something.


Anyone know what the max load is supposed to be on this? I think hodgdon says 27.5, and sierra says 28.5 both for 107's. But, I found loads on 6mmbr.com that used 29.0 and 29.5. So I'm guess I should just start around 10% under say 30 gr and work up and see what I get. I'll be using HBN coated bullets, so I may need a little more powder to get the same results.

H4895 is just a fuzz fast for that bullet weight in that cartridge. Varget & RE-15 are the usual 'go-to' powders for 105-107gn bullets, around 29.5-30.5gn. Definitely a 'warm' load, work up, etc. etc. etc.

That said... might want to check out the 6mm BR page on... 6mmBR.com , aka accurateshooter.com. There are some H4895 loads there, by some fairly reputable shooters. I will say its not a powder I've ever ran into someone using in matches that I've talked to - but if you've got it and it ends up workin' for ya, go for it! ;D

I found some of my info on 6mmbr.com. In fact it said Kyle Brown set a 1000 yard record with 105 amax's over 29.0 gr. of H4895. So Iwould think it will work. I was going to try some Amaxs, but couldn't find any. I had good results with them in other calibers.

J. Schmidt had one for 105 bullets with 29.5 gr. of H4895 also. He apparetenly got 1/4 moa 25 shot agg at 200 yards. If my gun shoots that I'll be happy.

I'm shooting 30g of Re15 with 107smk's in mine. Mine was so so with Varget and I didn't test 4895 to much once I shot with Re15 - it was much more consistent. I may go back and try Varget again this spring now that I have a few rounds down the tube.

I found the same thing that Monte said, the H4895 is a bit fast and gave lower velocities and higher pressure signs then Varget or RE15 w/ the 105's. That said, if you don't mind that, try it out. It'll just be 100 fps ish slower

I used H4895 in my 1:10 twist 28" 6BR with 95 BIBs and 95 Berger VLDs. Wasn't my top powder but it was pretty darn close. I would suggest trying the 95 Berger VLDs or the 95 SMK. Both have a ballistic coefficient close to the 105s and 107s and the match your H4895 a little better. 8 lbs will fill a lot of BR bases. Might as well as match your bullet to your available powder. I tested some loads at 100 yards yesterday. Right around 29.2 gr. of 4895 seemed pretty good. I still need to play with the seating depth. But I both 29.0 and 29.2 had the same POI at 100m and grouped aroud .3xx". I'm going to shoot in a IBS 600 yard shoot this weekend and well see how it does at range. Hopefully I'll have more time to test loads before the next shoot.

My goal is just to do better than I did with my factory 223 barrel. That was a 7.3" agg, and I think a 154 score. Although right now the weather for the weekend is calling for 36 degree's and rain. Not my favorite conditions. lol

In my Savage F Class gun 6mmbr Varget 28.2 with 107SMK with a .010 jump has worked well at 2850 FPS .3Moa at 300 and .3 at 600 bout as good as I have done in past 6 months that i have had it , just sent it back to Savage last wk, i had to make 25 moa adjustments to center my windage knob was way to right had some elevation issues to, I had my 10FP do same thing when I went to site it in, they replaced the barrel.

Went to a IBS 600 shoot yesterday. Didn't have much time for load development. But, I agg'ed 5.7" A couple of my groups had 1 shot get away from me and open them up. My best group was 3.6". The wind was a mess yesterday.

I also picked up a pound of varget while I was there. May as well do it right if I'm going to do it. I'll try this out, if it works well I get more at the next shoot.

well my f class gun will be shipped back on thursday, they replaced the barrel, second gun out of four that they have replaced barrel all for same issue, turn around was fast 3 wks, they do have a great turn time.

That is pretty respectable in the wind. I have many of days I would have loved to have seen a sub-MOA agg at 600 yds.

What kind of velocity are you all getting. I'm only getting 2765 out my 28" McGowen with 30g Re15.

I did a ladder test with some varget at 600 yards the other day. I plan to get back to the range this weekend with a second ladder in .1 grain increments starting at load 8 and working up to load 9. Then go the 5 shot groups and figure out my seating depth. Shots 8-10 measured 2.8" of vertical. If I recall the loads correctly (notes are at home) they were...
