UPDATING my FVSS 22-250 to a 6.5x284

Is it possible to update my FVSS 22-250 to a 6.5x284?

I would like to punch paper @ 1K and PD hunt with the gun!

Or what would you recommend? For some reason, I have never liked my 22-250 and want to make something different out of it.

Send it to SSS and let him handle it or?

6.5x.284 might be a bit much for PD's. Barrel life of that round seems to be a thousand or less, and I have heard of guys shooting that in 3 days of Pdogging. The 6br might be a good compromise, or one of the variants- I am not familiar with the brx's dashers, and so forth. Hard to beat a 22-250 for PD's. .243 is something else you could look at for dual purpose- it will get to 1k fairly convincingly from what I read.

I might try a new barrel on the 22-250!

A new barrel will probably make it more accurate but it wont get the 22-250 to 1k. It is pretty difficult to have a rifle that can do both of these tasks well. One or the other will suffer. No need to send it to SSS just for the barrel change- you can do that yourself. But if timing and truing are in your plans it would only a little more money to have Fred install the barrel while he has the action.

I definately wouldnt do a 6.5-284 for prarie doggin. You'd burn it up in no time. If you want a 6.5 caliber go to a .260 or .260AI. I have a 260 and it was lethal on the dogs this past year. Plus it has excellent ballistics to get it to 1000yds.

As mentioned above a 243 would be a good choice too, or even a 6br. I see you already have a 243vlp though, which is also capable.

My vote would be the 260/260ai, but a good friend of mine is considering selling his SSS/Douglas 6.5x55 barrel very soon. If I can have enough willpower to not buy it myself I can ask him if you're interested.

I dont know what barrel life would be like, but a 22-250Ai in 1:7" would work well. The 7 twist would allow use of bullets like the 90grn VLD, and possibly some of the custom 100/105grn bullets out there. ......If you just wanted to be different. Might not be the best choice ever, but would definately work, and be unique ;D

a 6x47L or 6.5x47L would be perfect with the proper twist. Your barrel would last tons longer than the 284 and use alot less powder.

sorry to piggyback (not sorry enough I didn't do it though ) -- are these long or short action? Am I right in assuming that both fit the same bolt head as 22-250 etc.??

I am not a praire dog shooter but hunt larger fur bearers etc.

As such, I shoot almost exclusively from a cold barrel.

How does the 6.5X284 stack up for barrel life when shot cold?

And what about those CO2 barrel cooler kits that I heard about a few years ago ........ good bad or indifferent?
