Are these reloads? All the same lot of brass? Have you tried any factory ammunition or other cases? Did the Extractor come with the larger bearing ball that goes under it, or are you still using the factory 1/8” steel ball?

Ok….. how about the other questions I asked? I’m sorry, but we can’t help if you’re not giving us information. In addition to my other questions above, does your bolt have the 223 Front Baffle like the picture below?

Has the rifle ever functioned properly?
    Did you build the rifle?
Depending on the year of the bolt head you may have the wrong extractor. Look to see if the extractor is partially in the bolt head bore where it will grab the lip of the case.
The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.

It's a long action and yes
    It grabs the case good
    Just doesn't hold on. As
Soon as it clears the chamber
It lets go. I got a good deal on
    This
I really don't like the long
Action. I use it for cast bullets
    Only.
    Thanks

I suggest re-reading my post #4, then re-reading my post #2. You are still ignoring a couple questions.

What I can say is you need to get the correct Front Baffle. This: https://www.gunshack.com/savage-part...on-bolt-baffle

Here is a picture showing the correct front baffle installed on a Long Action Bolt in 223. You can see the part I circled in Red us the extension leg of the Baffle which prevents the bolt from coming back further than needed. I’m not saying this is going to fix the issue, it’s simply what is correct.

Also, I’d recommend doing the larger steel bearing ball under the Extractor. Can’t hurt, and may very well help. You want a 9/64” (.140) steel ball. (A 3.5mm ball also works. Honestly, I’d recommend replacing the entire Extractor/Ejector parts with a new Aftermarket parts kit from Lumley or Kinney’s, but that’s me.

Lastly, still those unanswered question, which you can probably guess what the answer is. I would hope you’ve tried multiple cases, factory ammunition before just thinking it’s the weapon.

The extractor dose only that. Extract. Once the case is pulled past the receiver the Ejector will push it off the bolt. How well depends on the condition and cleanliness of the ejector button. Some .223s used a different, longer extractor then the .308. Are you sure you have the right one after you changed it?

I had the same vintage rifle with the same problem. I ordered a new extractor and ball from a vendor here. Problem solved. This is an easy diy fix.

He already installed a new Extractor. It’s not the problem. I told him to check & make certain it’s using the oversize BB. That may or may not help, but it certainly won’t hurt. He said in the beginning it was all military brass. I asked twice & have yet to be answered, if any other brass or factory ammunition was tested. If those will function well, the problem would be in the military brass he was using.
