looking to bring back the old 250 3000 with a Modern "Twist"

Here is the plan.
I'm looking for a used Axis I, thinking a standard or long action I think. I want room to use 115 gr copper bullets. I can get a 250 savage AI 20" 1X10 barrel from Shaw for around $380.
The dies will have to be from Redding, there a bit expensive at like $250.
I'm thinking about making it a dedicated night hunting gun.

The 1-10" twist probably won't be fast enough to stabilize those 115gr solid copper bullets if they're the longer VLD-style. Copper is lighter than lead, so even though a 1-10" twist will easily stabilize most conventional copper cup/lead core bullets, a solid copper bullet of the same weight will be noticeably longer and require a faster twist. You can cheat a little on twist rate if you push them fast enough, but the .250-3000 Savage, even in an Ackley Improved like I have, won't provide enough speed to help in that regard. A 25-06 or .25-06 AI maybe, but not a .250-3000 Savage or AI.

If I were wanting to build a .25 caliber to shoot the newer long/sleek bullets I'd probably go the .25-284 Norma route. The .25 Creedmoor has had some popularity in recent years, but I wouldn't recommend it on a Savage platform due to all the well documented feeding/extracting issues Savage's have with the Creedmoor cartridges.

I see on the Barnes load info there 115 bullets need a 1X10 twist with the 257 Roberts?

If you are referring to the Barnes 115 TSX Copper Bullets, they are 1.228” long & a 1:9 or faster twist is recommended. Just as Jim pointed out.

This is right from the horse’s mouth. The reloading page is likely an oversight, as the list 1:10 for ALL the different weights in 257 Ackley.

It could be a misprint, Hammer says a 104 gr is 1x10 Bullet Length is 1.140″

A 110 is Required minimum twist rate is 1-8.25″ or faster, Bullet length is 1.277″

For what ever reason Show doesn't offer anything but 1X10 in 25 caliber.

Even at 2700fps, this bullet has a 1.16SG which is Marginal Stability. Even the 1:9 puts it at 1.44SG which is still marginal, but only .06 from the 1.5SG safe zone. The calculator actually calls for a 1:8.75 to be comfortably stable.

YUP I wish Shaw would put a faster twist in there 25 caliber barrels, 1X10 is the only option.
We just built my Granddaughter a Ruger American "3006 action" in 7MM57 AI and got it with a 7 twist. It will run long bullets great. We are only shooting 140 TTSX right now but at some point we CAN go longer if wanted.

Gotchya. Well, in that case, I’d recommend sticking with either lighter copper or heavier, conventional bullets, for best results.
