I have a savage 110c series J and was having some slight issues with the casing extraction. I removed the extractor to examine the ball and this is what I found, is this normal, can't seem to find anything about it.

My understanding is that there's supposed to be a round detent ball under the extractor, what I have here is sort of a cone shaped cylinder, that is what I am asking about being normal.

Under the Extractor, yes, there should be a steel ball directly under it, then a spring. I have no idea what you mean by a cone shaped cylinder??
The factory uses a .125” steel ball, but one of the long term members here (sharpshooter), figured out using a .140” bearing ball works better. So aftermarket kits use those. I recommend rebuilding the bolt head with one of 2 kits. Either the Lumley’s or Kinney’s.

Extraction fail at the beginning, trying to break it loose from the chamber? Or at the end, falling off the bolt before ejection?

From the original picture, it is the piece above the spring. (cylinder with cone head), no ball.

That look a lot like an M1 Carbine extractor spring and plunger. Does the knob on the end have a flat side?

Well, the gun was a hand me down from a friend's late husband who was a gun guru. It shots fine, sometimes hard to pull open the bolt, but I noticed some brass build up in the extractor area. I decided to clean it up and removed the extractor and that is what I found. When I looked that area up online, it shows a ball. Just wondering, because that's not what is there.
I was speaking out of turn. Just looked familiar. Recently did some work for a local gun shop on an M1 carbine that had a similar long tail on the plunger that was jambing up the works. Photo shows a correct M1 carbine extractor plunger and spring. Not related to the ball and spring that should be in your bolt. Whatta Hobby!Originally Posted by gundogwanted

Yeah, guess I should get the correct one for it. LOL.
It’s just taking the place of the steel ball. But yes, I would replace it, the Spring and the extractor. And the Ejector by getting one of the kits I provided links to. I recommend the Lumley. But I’ve used the Kinney’s in the past as well & they work great.
