I was browsing my local gun shop today and came across a takedown Savage 1895 in 250-3000. Now I know the 1895 was a predecessor to the 1899/99 and not a whole lot of them were made, I've never seen one in person before but have seen 1899's and 99's. I checked the serial number on savagelevers.com and it came back as a 1913 model 99, the barrel is clearly marked "Model 1895 and 250 3000." From what I can find the 250-3000 did not come out until at least 1915. Therefore assuming the serial number data is corrrect and that a rifle made in 1913 is in fact a model 99 not a model 1895 how does a barrel marked model 1895 and 250 3000 even exist? I would assume that when the model 1899 came out production of the 1895 stopped therefore there shouldn't be any 1895's in 250-3000. I would also assume the whole internet and several reference books I've looked at aren't two decades late on the date that the 250-3000 came out. Any ideas on this one? Regardless of what's going on it's in decent shape with an excellent bore and it's cheap. I'm planning on bringing it home Thursday.
