    Question Savage 23B rear sight

Has anyone tried, or thought of trying, to put a Skinner "Lo Pro" sight on a 23B?
Not sure what the screw size or thread pitch might be on the top rearmost screw plug. I believe it's a '6' but the tread pitch ...

Since OEM sights seem to be unobtainable, and I'm not interested in doing a side mount, this might be a viable alternative.

The smaller screw is a common size, 6-48 or 8-40 can't remember which! The bigger screw is a #10. I have the same rifle but it came with a Lyman peep sight. The original Savage peep sights do not exist in this world! I don't see why a Skinner wouldn't work, just no windage adjustment!! You might have to mess with front sight height, too. I have Skinner's on several rifles. love them!!
I modified a Brownell universal dove tail sight base to attached to the existing peep sight holes, so I wouldn't have to D&T an original unmolested .22 Hornet. Put on a vintage scope!

I'm leaning towards it being a 6-40 right now. Tried that size tap, but didn't force it. Tried a 6-48 screw, that didn't go either.
The receiver hasn't been drilled & tapped for a side mount. I intend on keeping it that way. May just have to live with it.

I removed the plug screw from one of mine and as far as I can determine, (with cold fat fingers, old eyes) it's 40TPI. It's smaller than a #6 and bigger than a #4. The one I put the scope base on was of a later manufacture so maybe they changed sizes!!??

The earlier guns with two different size screws took a #10-36 and a #5-48. Later they went to two screws the same size with a closer hole spacing that are either #8-40's or #6-48's, I don't remember which. The #10-36 is the same size as used by Winchester for the front tang sight screw, those can be found, the #5-48's are a lot harder - Stevens used a #5-44 for tang sights and #5-40 seems to be available, but not #5-48's. I found a tap & die set for those and thread my own.

The Savage Model's 1904, 1909, 1911 and 1912 also used #5-48's to attach the barrel sight. These are all button head screws, so not much good if that type head will not work.

    Thanks for the info!
