Savage 110 Ultralite Bolt-Action Centerfire Rifle - .30-06 Springfield longest Elk Hunt?

Savage 110 Ultralite Bolt-Action Centerfire Rifle - .30-06 Springfield using Hornady 30-06 Springfield 178gr ELD-X Precision Hunter or 30-06 Springfield 178gr ELD-X Premium (which one is better by the way?). All factory ammo.
    1. What would be the farthest you would be comfortable taking an elk?
    2. Will it be accurate at 1000 yards for plinking metal?

    Thanks

Distance on big game is partly gun, partly the conditions and mostly the shooter. Getting an accurate range and being able to hit the critical vitals in adverse conditions is almost an art form. Out here I've seen many folks with adequate rifles screw up shots because they thought shooting at a 10" plate on the range meant they could do it in the field.

If you can hit it in the vitals you can kill it with a 30-06.
Rifles a nd shooters are indivifuals. Some rifles may shoot one load well while others may shoot something completely different well and some rifles may be more finicky than others. Some folks shoot well some dont.
The 30-06 is capable of launching bullets that far so the question then becomes is your rifle and load accurate enough and are you a good enough shooter to pull it off.
A good wife and a steady job has ruined many a great hunter.

    More info:

    Charlie is correct.

    1) can’t truly be answered accurately due to the reasons Charlie gave.

2)The cartridge will reach 1000 and beyond.

Like Charlie states, it depends on shooting style(freehand, prone, bench, etc), optics, accuracy of the gun/ammo combo, weather, and capabilities of the shooter. This goes for both plinking and longrange hunting.
