    New to the Savage

    Good evening,

I have some knowledge of weapons as I was a military police officer for 15 years. I've also done a bit of small game hunting such as squirrel, rabbit, and birds. This all with shotguns. I am new to the rifle scene except for those of military usage. I have recently been gifted a Savage 1899. I have discovered it was manufactured in 1913 using a serial lookup page. I was told it is a 30-30. I have not fired it and nor will I until I've had it inspected by a gunsmith. It appears to function as it should and all operations seem solid. I do have questions.

The lever has an H stamped on it and according to some sites that identifies it as 1956. I'm a little confused by the conflicting date data.
How do I find out for sure what caliber weapon it is?

    I'm sure I'll have more.

Thanks for letting me in the group.

    Arron

    Welcome!

You actually have an original 99. The 1899 model designation wasn’t released until sometime after 1913.. I think 1921 maybe? So yours is perhaps a 99F, or 99H perhaps. Not sure. I’m not an authority on the much older models. Have any pictures you can post?
