    Savage 110 Bolt Head Question

So I am converting a Savage 110 (30-06) to 30 Nosler. I ordered a new barrel and magnum bolt head (like I did when I built the 26 Nosler). I did not realize they packed the bolt head with the barrel and threw it away. Go figure... Anyways I was thinking, could I just not put the standard (30-06) bolt head in the lathe and open it up to magnum case head spec? I know it needs to be stripped first. I know the Magnum uses the same ejector and extractor, is there really any difference other than the face diameter? Otherwise I guess I will order another one sighhhh....Thanks!

Absolutely you can! For those with their own tooling & know how, that is the best option as the bolt head is already fit to that Action. All the bolt head parts are the same.

Here’s a chart showing the various Bolt Head face size by case size.

The only way that will work is if you also move the hole for the extractor spring.

Hmm, hadn’t thought of that not looking at it. Yeah, could be an issue. I think it would still work, but a new Magnum bolt head is inexpensive. Midway has them for $25! So actually, “time being money” and all replacing it is cheaper. LOL!

Saw that coming. That magnum rim was just going to push that 30-06 located extractor out of the way.
The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.

Yeah, after looking at them it’s a problem. My bad, Sorry.

Lucky I still had an answer for your problem though.. just go with the inexpensive Magnum Bolt Head at Midway & swap your Ejector/Extractor parts to it.

If you do nor want to swap the parts, who sell the extractor, ejector, etc? Will the small firing pin fit my 2004 Savage?

Your rifle already uses the Small Firing Pin. They all went to Small diameter striker pin in 2001.

Kits with the larger bearing ball & better parts are avail. at a few places.
