Factory 243 tubes are 9 twist in Savage
???
I just got a used (2005 model 10) .243. Thought the twist was 1 in 9.25" but when I run a tight patch and check...the rate looks to be 1 in 7". Tested a bunch of times and get same results.
Have any of you guys seen this twist in your barrels ? Think this is a plain jane package gun...plastic stock and cheap scope when I got it. Shoots good. Just wondering about the twist.
Thanks, Pete

Welcome to the site.
The Factory barrel will be 1 in 9.25, but each barrel is different some will be faster and some will be slower. (This holds true with aftermarket premium barrels) I think 1 in 7 is a bit unlikely, but I would say it is possible. From my experience Savage 243 barrels seam to run a bit faster than 1 in 9.25 most will stabilize bullets that they should not.
Thanks for the replies. I'm going to check another barrel that is 1 in 10" (supposedly) to make sure my system to check is ok. Will post to confirm what I find again. Other rifle is a Ruger #1 in .243.
Thanks for the help

Just tested another rifle barrel in .243 that is listed as 1 in 9" and it tested exactly that with the tight brush and cleaning rod method. Looks like the Savage I mentioned does have the 1 in 7" twist.
Thanks, Pete
I've heard it speculated that twist rates are generally accurate to +/- 0.5".
You sure its a 0.243 and not a 0.224? ;D
Cheers...

Shoot a 6mm 115grn Berger through it, if it stabilizes it, I'ld call it a 1/7" too. If it doesn't, it's not a 1/7". Then sell the extra bullets.
I've used the same method to find twist rates on barrels before and it has always proven accurate for me. You're a lucky man if it really is a 7" twist....providing it's accurate.
Thanks for all the info. Am gonna run another tight brush test thru it tomorrow. I don't have any 115 gr. bullets handy but will keep that in mind.

After testing twist with a TIGHT brush...found my rifle has the normal 9.25" twist rate. My cleaning rod brush was loosening up before and did it every time I tested.....used pliers this time and got it right.......
Thanks for the help.
