    Barrel shank question

Guys I have a model 111 in 7mm Remington Magnum. My question is, is the magum action a large shank or small shank? I really don't want to have to seperate the barrel and action to find out. I'm sure this has been gone over before and I apologize for reposting, but I want to change the barrel and am not sure what shank I need to get. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks Jason

    Re: Barrel shank question

If your rifle has an Accutrigger, it "likely" is a large shank. If it has a flat on the rear of the receiver, it is most likely a small shank. If there's a definite step down in front of the barrel nut, it is likely a large ring. However, I know of no one pat answer. other than measuring the shank. Others may be able to help you more.

no accutrigger and a flat rear. I'm thinking that it was not a large shank, but I could not remember and I know that some of the magnum rifles were large shank actions.

I own numerous Savage bolt guns, of which several are magnums, including one ultra mag. All are small shank, although one has the Accutrigger.

So do you know if a 300Win Mag will work in the 7mag action. I need to do some measuring.

By the way Art, you had a 300win barrel in the sale adds, some time ago, and I was wondering if you still had it. Thanks Jason

    Re: Barrel shank question

On a regular action, only ultra mags and short mags are large shanks. All target actions are large shanks.

It would be quite rare for a 7mmMag or 300winmag to be large shank.

I think that I read in another post, that Savage does not currently make any Long Action Large Shank Actions. So, your Model 111 Long Action should have a Small Shank 7mm Rem Mag barrel.

Easy way to tell is measure the barrel nut.
    5/8" long = large shank
    7/8" long = small shank

My model 111 in 7mmRemMag is a small shank. I know this for a fact since I re barreled it with a match grade barrel.
