    Great Deal

Snagged a 1999 "F" prefex Model 10 Short action, stagger feed, with the old 3 screw trigger. Came in a Choate varmint stock. $175 for the pair. Just received a 24" 308 barrel from NSS yesterday. Putting it all together today. I'm one happy camper!

You’re right that was a great snag you found. Congrats.

Some people have all the luck, I'm jealous. Yesterday also while working at the range a fellow customer I see all the time just picked up a 204Ruger Model 12 with a Boyds Thumbhole stock and scope for $320.00. When he got it he said the bolt would not close. Front action screw was too long. Also all the scope mounts were loose. By the time he left yesterday it was shootin .4" groups at 100 yards.

Old man charm I guess. . Actually, a friend had it gathering dust in his safe for a number of years now. I just caught him at the right time. Installed/head spaced the barrel yesterday, going to sight it in and break in the barrel this morning. I'm not real crazy about the Choate Varmint stock but it will do for a while.

Yeah, I’m not a fan either. Good thing though… those are easy to sell. Still so many people who like them.

The barrel is a keeper. Laser sighted the rifle Saturday night so it was on at 100 yards yesterday. 168gr SMK hand load, FC brass and BR-2 primers with 43 grains of Varget seated to 2.800" yielded 2698fps, 10 rounds in 1.142". Hardley any indication of copper in the bore cleaning after every two rounds. A very nice start for load development. Next test loads are 175 grain SMKs over Norma 203B.

Yes, plan on selling the Choate Varmint and will probably go with an MDT Chasis. I have a Savage M10 in 6.5 Creed in a factory chasis and really like it.

Nice to read something positive about NSS. I've been thinking about picking up a .308 barrel, but I've read some very negative reviews.

I should have clarified, the horror stories I read (I think on here) were specifically with regard to the take-off barrels in their Clearance section. I was looking up reviews because I was trying to find a source for an inexpensive tube to complete an old 110.

I wouldn't give any credence to complaints about a new take-off barrel, it's not like Jim made them, he simply removed and sold them.

I've had nothing but stellar service from him.

Yeah, I don't doubt that he's great. I should have clarified that I had only read about NSS in the context of those take-offs. I'm just happy to read people have positive opinions of NSS!

Yep, I'm another one devoted to NSS. Jim is great to talk to.

I've used take off barrels before, Rem mainly. You get some bad ones and you get some good ones. The gunsmith I went to back then would buy them by the dozen.

You might be surprised how well the 22" barrel that came on that rifle will shoot.
I love the rifles from that era right after Ron Coburn took over. Actually probably my favorites. The ones I have from that era had very good QC and with a little load development will shoot the lights out just as they came.
