Understanding that different guns accept different loads. I started at 92grs and worked up!
97 grs of H 4831 under the 225 Accubond shoots 2" at 500 yards so have never changed the load in my 19" barrel Striker.

    I'm using 94-95g of H1000 behind a 300SMK with no pressure signs.

I think I'm using the older slower lot of H1000. When I start a new batch of powder, I'll drop back down and work up a new load.

Long and short. It's a lot of work to get them to work as a repeater and they work great as a single shot. So, any action with a magnum bolt head will work.

Excelent, thank you. I just want a single shot .338RUM and was going to start with a stevens 200 in .300 Win Mag.

    Re: 338 edge loading suggestions

My McGowan barrel using 300grn Bergers are touching the lands @ 4.030 consistantly!

Bergers in all of my other guns usually shoot best on the lands or jammed .010.

I havn't found anybody using Bergers and listing their OAL.

Has anyone tried or heard of anyone shooting a 338 Edge using Berger 300grns on the lands or jammed?

Are the Bergers in your other guns VLD's?

    Remember, the Berger 338 isn't a VLD, it's a hybrid. They shouldn't be jump/jam sensitive like the VLD's.

Yes, all of my others are VLD's

What is the difference between VLD's and Hybirds?

Otherwise, all info I have found on the 338 Edge loads state their COAL is around .050 off the lands, again your thoughts?

    Re: 338 edge loading suggestions

    Most simply.

The secant ogive is the long sleek taper that VLD's are known for. They leave a shorter bearing surface and use the lands to help get the bullet started and aligned as it starts to travel down the barrel.

The tangent ogive is a little more abrupt, like on Accubonds, SMK's and the like. They leave a longer bearing surface and don't need the lands for alignment.

The hybrid uses a tangent next to the where the lands engage the bullet and then a secant to the bullet tip. This gives a good compromise between stability and higher BC form factor.

I use the 300g SMK seated about .250" away from the lands.

I am going to load up a few starting .030 out and move in using the same H1000 load! Will keep everbody posted. In fact, all my SMk's loads are good on the lands. I just don't wont to over pressure thegun.

geargrinder, it also helps that your barrel was dialed into .0002" to the bore when the chamber was cut haha

Unless I am working on a blank that I can not get lined up that good (cheapy blanks) all of my barrels are dialed into that spec. The little extra goes a long way especially when you are shooting 1000+ yrds

    No doubt.

It also helps that the bearing surface on the SMK is so long that even after the .250" jump, there is still more than .250" bearing surface in the neck.

I think that's the reason that SMK's and Berger Hybrid's just aren't sensitive to jump/jam. I don't recall hearing about anyone with an Edge that doesn't shoot.
