    Barrel and stock question

I recently purchased a barrel for my savage axis. The barrel purchased was a savage 110 heavy fluted barrel. The diameter of that barrel clearly won’t fit in the barrel cut out for that stock. My question is can a buy a 110 stock or is the 110 and axis stock different in other ways?

You need to either inlet your stock for the barrel profile or get a stock that fits your barrel profile.

Sand paper & a wood dowel will work to inlet. You can find many videos & how to’s online by searching “Inletting rifle stock”.

I got the savage model 110 barrel that has fluting and a threaded muzzle. Do you know any stock I can get that won’t break the bank?

Boyd's are probably the best buy. I have one on my Axis with a heavy barrel.

Like Dave said, just get a dowel about the same size as the barrel and some sandpaper (80-100 grit) and start working on the barrel channel. I do the final bit with the barrel. Get some 2" masking tape and apply to the bottom of the barrel. Install the action loose. Use the sandpaper like a reverse shoe shine (grit side out toward stock). Keep going until you can tighten the action screws and still move the paper. I change to 150-220 grit when it gets closer (that paper is a bit thinner as well.

Thanks, that’s my plan to get by until I can get the new Magpul stock.

Do you know if the barrel stated above is a bull barrel?

Depends on which model it came from. Could be what Savage calls a 'Full profile' or 'Heavy varmint'.

The 110 and Axis stocks are different and not cross compatible. The 110 has the recoil lug attached to the action, the Axis is built into the stock and mates with a notch in the action. A Boyds stock with bull barrel configuration would work, and I think Hogue makes one that would work. As others have said, you can modify your existing stock to work.
