How to put a receiver sight a Savage 12 LRPV?

I'm looking to iron sight this rifle and just wonder if anyone has done it using the scope mount holes for a base? I seem to recall a PALMA version of this rifle. Any thoughts on getting a decent match receiver sight on here will be appreciated. I have Redfield PALMA and International sights on hand and a few other odd match sights.

Simple solution would be just D&T for a base I can use with the Redfields. Just hate to drill on such a nice rifle. (-:}

One issue is the left side ejection port and another is the SN is stamped on the back of the receiver right where I'd have to drill holes if I D&T for a Redfield base. Base on my 40X looks like it would fit but I don't want to deface the SN and the holes would have to go right through it.

I wouldn’t drill & and tap in addition to the base screw holes already. The Receiver will be Swiss Cheese! I’m no expert on match irons… I use scopes & reflex sights. But aren’t there rear sights with the Savage screw pattern? Or match sights that fit a Picatinny? Worse case, I would make an adapter plate to match the existing holes & whichever sight I wanted.

If you look up Palma sights, most of the current ones attach to a rail, so no new holes would be needed. They are a higher profile (and expensive). There are many open sights made for rails due to the AR popularity.

For a very low profile then sights like a Skinner or for slightly higher the Williams

If I had a good one like your Palma I'd just drill and tap for it.

Dave, that might be a useable solution right there. Little pricy but considering what I've already spent on various target rifles that's a drop in the bucket. That might work on a few other rifles I have that I'd love to put peep sights on. Thanks for the link!

Charlie, the OP is speaking of one of these sights specifically. Like I said, I’m no expert with Irons.. my thinking is a simple halo or peep sight with basic adjustability. But these in the picture are designed to mount to the side of an Action or an adapter, like the one I posted the link for. I agree with the OP’s last statement.. it’s too expensive. Hence making one.

Arlon, whenever I’m looking to make a part I first look for something I can repurpose. Look at the link I posted below and imagine a piece of 1/4” Aluminum plate with holes drilled & tapped, mounted on the side of the clamp at a 90 degree angle. It would in effect, be a much less expensive version of the previous clamp from above. You baggin’ what I’m rakin’?

I have used the Lipski sight base shown in the link. It worked very well. Clamp to Picatinny rail and screw the sight to it.

I found an adapter on ebay that should work. Made for Redfield to Rail, I have a few Redfield sights so I should be good on that end and will use a "bloop tube" to mount a sight on the other end.

I do not have anyone with the fab experience to make something like I want. I could have probably cobbled something together but for what I ended up spending it wasn't worth the effort and will probably look better (if it actually works).

I do wish Savage would have put the rifle SN up front instead of right where I'd have to drill and tap for a receiver sight. Doubt very many of these get used with receiver sights so not a concern for them. My case is a special need for a very unusual local iron sight "Schuetzen" match. (-:}

There were some sights made for the Contender and Encore that attached via the scope tap holes. Kinda like this one.

There were some others made like that with target quality sights. Just can't find them. I suspect they are all out of production. Since the advent of rails the old sights and mounts were dropped. Same thing with rimfire and air rifle grooves/rails.

Got the adapter. It Has a lot of adjustability so I think it will work just fine for my needs.
