Twist on 6.5X55AI or Standard 6.5X55 Swede Barrel

    Hey all,

I am about to order a new barrel and I have a question for all you Swede AI and Swede owners out there on twist. I want to shoot 120gn through 142gn. I will be using the 129sst also and I am wondering if the 8.5 twist will stabilize the 142's and the lighter pills as well. I know everyone says to get the 8 twist but I was thinking that this is primarily for the 140- 142s and might not stabilize the lighter ones.

I have always heard that in the .223 that 1 in 9 will not stabilize the 69gn and 77gn pills but every 9 twist .223 barrel I have EVER had would. And do it well at least to 200 yds. So I'm just wondering if the compromise is best.

    Any input is appreciated!

Generally, the heavier you go with a bullet the faster twist you need. The 139-142 class bullets will need a 1:8 twist barrel. The lighter bullets generally need less twist because they have less bearing surface and have more velocity. So, if it can stabilize a 139-142 class bullet it is likely to have no problems stabilizing a the lighter bullets. The only problem you might run into with the lighter bullets will being able to load close to the lands. But rest assured, you will have zero problems stabilizing a 120grain bullet with a 1:8.5 or 1:8 twist. Just order a 1:8 twist for for peace of mind. For what its worth, I have never saw anybody get an aftermarket barrel for the 6.5x55 that wasn't an 8 twist. I have a shilen select match 8 twist on mine and love it. Hope this helps.

This is all what I figured. I am an "overthinker" when I am about to buy a barrel. Wisdom is found in a multitude of counsel after all.

Thank you both for your reassuring comments and opinions.

1 in 8" it is. Of course ::)

When I built my 6.5X55 I ordered a 8.5 twist. I don't know why i didn't go with a 8" twist and was as I did more research I became a little worried that I'd made a mistake. So far, i have not had any issues shooting 140 grain bullets, however. That being said, I would go with the 8 twist just to be safe.

My 6.5 Swede is 8.5 twist. No worries with 140 Berger's or 142 Sierra's. Shoots both very well. ;D
