Got to fondle this beauty today for a bit while waiting on my background check for another gun to clear. Has some obvious handling dings in the wood, but otherwise looks to be in fairly good shape. The odd checkering pattern on the grip makes me question if the stock is original as I've never seen that pattern before, but given the engraving maybe this was a special high grade pattern only used on such guns. Tag listed it as a Model 1899 with "D" engraving chambered in .250-3000 Savage. Unfortunately the $15k price tag was a little out of my budget.

I’m surprised there’s not a factory letter with this rifle, or is there? I think it looks attractive, but the graphic details of the game is a little weak from what one might expect from the era. I would assume the engraver was Enoch Tues. Maybe he wasn’t able to engrave game as well as his peers? Maybe a comparison with known engraved examples by Tues, including game scenes, might be worthwhile?
AND it's a take down!! I like the how they mounted the front swivel stud!! A lot of work went into the detail!!
Oh, that's sweet!!!! It's very close to the configuration of that Hayward "Harlem Hellfighter" 1899H that sold at Rock Island a couple weeks ago. This one looks more original, perchbelly stock and front integral sight base are both appropriate for 1917..
It's a Savage 1899 Model 250-3000 with B "flame" checkering, fancy wood, D engraving, and "Damascening of action (bolt and lever)" - which is the jeweled bolt and lever. Buttplate almost surely a replacement.
It might letter as a Victor Grade, though a Victor Grade should come with name engraved on the bottom, the Victor never explicitly was listed for the 250-3000 (though Savage would have sold one if you wanted to pay for it), and catalogs listed no mention of a jewelled bolt/lever.
Absolutely gorgeous! I love that flame checkering, and D engraving is beautiful. Gotta love the tiger!
Edit: with all the extra work I'll bet this went out in 1917, but by serial number it would date to 1916.
Here is the Hayward "Hellfighters" rifle. Almost identical configuration, but on a 1914 1899H in 303. Fancy wood, B flame checkering, D engraving, damascened bolt.. it went for over $20k with juice, and it'd been restocked/rebarreled in the 1920's.

I'm not a good judge of the high end engraved gun prices. They come up so seldom that it's hard to get a good feel for "going price". I'm surprised it's still there if it looks as good as the pics. I'd love to see a letter to find out who it sold to originally.
I always said that if I buy another 99 it would be in .250-3000 or .284 Win, but I don't need one that nice or that expensive. lol Truly a beautiful rifle though, and the photo's really don't do the best job of capturing the depth and scope of the figure of the wood.
