    77gr

In the Sierra Edition V..........in .223 REM......

    They list 69gr, 77gr & 80gr for ARs

But, only list 69gr and 80gr for bolt guns, no 77gr.

Why do you suppose that is ?? ???

I asked the same question not too terribly long ago, and was told it was because you can use the 80gr info for the 77gr, but that didn't sound like a very good answer.

Wow, that's a pretty weak answer they gave you.

Because the of bullet seating depth robs the case of vital capacity making it counter productive in anything less than single shot where you can let out the bullet.

I agree. Then why list 80 grain load for an AR where OAL is short (260" max in almost all ARs).

Just about as weak as the 77 grain load would be if you used the 80 gr data. My 80 gr loads (seated just off the lands) are a good 1.0 grains less than my 77 gr loads that are seated mag length.

    Re: 77gr

When I got the 10FP from Savage the test target showed that they tested the gun with Fed ammo that was loaded with 77gr SMK's. I found the same thing that you did no listing for the 77Gr bullet in the bolt action section. (I never thought to look in the AR section) Well I called a good friend of mine at Sierra (Rich Machholz) to get some load data, and to answer a few other questions about the bullet. To start, Rich was surprised that Savage used that bullet to test the rifle, and that Federal was loading this bullet. Rich told me to use the AR15 Data, which surprised me that it was there. I asked Rich why they did not show that bullet in the bolt action section, and he told me that they "Never figured anyone would use it in a bolt gun." Basically the bullet was designed for the AR15.

Well since Savage used it for a test bullet, I figured I had to get some. First problem is they only come in boxes of 50, and they are expensive. I did find that it was a GREAT shooting bullet in the 9 twist 10PC. I used my favorite powder 4895 and shot some small groups with it. I also found that the round bucked the wind fairly well. I was very suprised by the performance of this bullet.

The 77gr MatchKings are also sold in boxes of 500, which can save you a little money. Through some judicious searching, I was able to pick some up for $92/500. I should have bought more though because where I bought from is sold out now.
