    Stripped scope base Screw holes

So I was finishing up my 358 build, went to put new bases on and realized the rear 2 threaded holes are galled up a little or stripped some. Waiting to hear back from a couple local smiths/dealers to see when they could attempt to chase them with a tap.

It's a model 11, short action, mid 2000s rifle I believe. They are the smaller screws so guessing 6-48 thread. My question is this... how many of you have successfully chased them and had them hold? My worry is even if we chase that when we torque down it will strip them. Any of you have this happen? If it was the off season I'd look into getting them drilled out for a larger size however deer season starts Saturday and I'd like to get to the range. I can start about a full turn or turn and a half before the screws stop. I think I rushed and forgot to clean the gunk out, which from reading is a common issue. Thoughts?

Shouldn’t be a problem. You can get yourself a 6-48 tap & do it yourself. The taps are cheap. I have them & always chase the thread when I remove/reinstall bases.

    +1 on what Dave said.

Also I am assuming by the fact that you built a 358 for hunting and you say that your season is coming up on Saturday that you must be hunting in Iowa. If so and you happen to be around my area I would be glad to assist if possible. Been building Savage for 15+ years and a machinist for almost 20 so if I can be of assistance just let me know.
