    converting my 12 f-class to 7mm saum


    is a magnum bolt head all i need ?
    will the standard magnum bolt head work on my bolt?

    Yes- you need the magnum bolt head.... and unless you have something different (like a right bolt- left port) then the parts should be drop in. Oh.... you also need a barrel. And make sure you get the right size of barrel shank.

    Actually, if you use the factory short action magnum bolt head, the firing pin you currently have will be too short by .125". This comes from the length of the bolt head lugs being longer and the firing pin needing to compensate not the bolt body. Regrettably many people think that it will work because it fits. Experience tells you a different story.

    To make the Savage Short Action Magnum bolt head work with your current parts, you will end up preloading the firing pin spring another 1/8 inch and increase the cocking (bolt lift) to an unbearable level in order to achieve proper firing pin protrusion. The best thing to do is purchase a PTG short action bolt head with 7/16 long lugs for a magnum or, to purchase the whole bolt with the correct head and firing pin. There are other work-a-rounds but They require a litlle extra skill and machinery. If you want to get into that I can share some things I tried.
    The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.
