    Caliber Change

Went out to shop and decided to change barrel on one of my rifles. Wanted to put on 30-06 but didn’t want to take the 25-06 barrel off the 111 as it is shooting well tight now. So I took the 22-250 Axis and used it, took about an hour to take scope off, swap barrels and put scope back on. Left is torquing everything, bore sighting and shooting. Hit head spacing on first try and checked 3 or 4 times to be sure something didn’t move as I tightened everything down. Also changed stocks as I have a heavy barrel stock that I have added weight in for the long action barrels so whole setup will weigh about 9 pounds. Not recoil sensitive but don’t have to walk very far to stand and a little extra weight makes easier shooting on old shoulders.

Awesome Wayne! I want to know your thoughts after load workup and a season behind you. I feel your pain in the shoulders my Razorback brother.

    Robin Hood,
Not much to work up a load when you buy off the shelf ammo. I waited too long to get in reloading game and at almost 77 not gonna start now. I shoot Hornady American Whitetail in my other calibers and that’s what I have in 30-06. Tightened, torqued and bore sighted today and if wind is not blowing going to try and shoot tomorrow.

Shot the 30-06 build today, pleased with the outcome. After bore sight shot at 25 yards, was about inch low and 7 inches left so adjusted scope to move to right and left height where it was. Two more shots were about inch low but in line so moved to 100 yards and 3 shots less than 1.5 inches apart, will go back and fine tune scope and call it done.

Three shots at 100 yards using Hornady American Whitetail 150 grain ammo. Bore sighted with one right to left adjustment at 25 yards, will go back and fine tune and call it done.

That american whitetail is decent stuff. A lot of people shoot it with great success. Good luck and thanks for the updates.

I no longer hunt, but if I was & really it was my only gig, I likely wouldn’t reload either. But then, who knows. I’m among those who LIKE all aspects of reloading.

Wayne, never too late to start something new.

Glad you got is shooting so quickly. Looks like it is ready for hunting season. The last year I went out (1980's) I carried a Garand. A bit heavy but I shoot it well enough at woods ranges.

Last time for me was 2007 for deer & 2008 (Varmint). Both times I was using my old Savage 116 Weather Warrior in 30-06 & Black/Grey Laminate stock.Still about the most beautiful rifle I’ve owned.

Interesting Wayne. My sponge finishes never looked like that. I have to say i like the pattern on the back end.

Fortunately for me I have been getting a buck every year with my bow. Last year 3 people built on the property surrounding where I hunt. That will be the end of it for me.

    Robin Hood,
I did the compound and crossbow hunting several years ago, killed deer with both. Have a vision problem with right eye and had to learn to shoot left handed so that finished my bow hunting career. This was my first try at sponge and used a rectangle piece of soft sponge so it didn’t work well, looked ok so I didn’t redo it.

This is Axis 308 that I did rattle can on, two coats of clear poly. Ok except for dark spots.

I like the spots. I may have gone with a matte clear coat but that is not my rifle and it looks great to me. Oh crap. I am getting inspired again! What did you use for the net.

I had some plastic/rubber drawer lining material that had the little square holes, cut a piece and painted a section let it dry and lined up holes for next section. Took a few days but hey I’m retired with lots of time and no money.

I also did my Winchester Model 70 in 7 mag with black background and green squares - it looks pretty nice too.

Went to sight in for deer season, first shot was still to right so made adjustment for second shot. Think I’m ready- 100 yards and probably won’t shoot that far. Also shot wife’s 243 and my 25-06 and didn’t need any adjustment on them.

The 30-06 build turned out OK - one shot at 95 steps with Hornady American Whitetail 150 grain.
