Where to get 308 bolt head

I am having a heck of a time finding a RH 308 bolt head. Everyone is out of stock and seems to have been for awhile. Anywhere other than PT&G to get one? I have read too many horror stories about them so kind of want to steer away. I didn't even think about the bolt head before I bought a barrel.

“Horror stories”? PTG bolt heads have been great for me. I think the “stories” you hear are people who don’t what they are doing and expect a drop in AR15 or Glock style part (which does happen sometimes. But if I get a part that doesn’t fit perfectly, I fit the part.) And then there is the bad mouthing from a few who have an axe to grind against Dave Kiff.

But to answer your question, No. Factory & PTG are the only sources. So if the Usual Suspects are out of stock, you’re out of luck. I gave away my last one here not long ago, otherwise it’d be yours. Maybe someone will have one.

I have had good success with them. One out of about 8 had to have the extractor detent hole deepend/lengthened by about .050" to get the ball to depress enough for the extractor to be installed. Outside of that it has all been good.
The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.

Very minor. The one I have now went in with nothing. But I’ve seen the same things. Some have needed a few thous. off the face. Of as Robin pointed out. Nothing bad. Certainly nothing like 1911 parts, for instance. I’ve built & worked on those for a lot of years now. When you order parts, each one needs to be hand fit.

    Here you go Charlie. https://www.savageshooters.com/conte...Configurations

Edit: sorry, let me clarify. The Axis uses the same Bolt head for Long or Short Action but one must know it’s the same as a 110 Short Action Bolt Head, and the 110s Long & Short Actions use different bolt heads.

Thanks Dave. I missed that one for some reason. Looks like the long action head could be milled a bit and fit the short action.

I just got one last week from Midway. Now my Axis is wearing the .308 barrel from my 12BVSS :)
