It doesn't take a special gunsmith to do the barrel swap on a Mark II. The tenon on the barrel is very close to a 10/22 barrel. All it takes is a gunsmith who knows how to run a lathe. It's more work to do the breech end for a remington action than it is for a savage rimfire. As far as getting the old barrel off is concerned, a brass rod down the center of the action and hammer will solve that problem after the pins are removed. I did a barrel swap on one a couple of years ago and it wasn't very difficult. I would suggest you talk to a local gunsmith about what you are wanting to do.

Want someone good - Not some garage axle grinder.
If I wanted to just put any old tube on a squirrel gun maybe.
    I'll find somebody some where.
I don't need a Benchrest rifle but don't want there it works either.

I think you'll be better off to buy a Model 93 in .17HMR than to spend any money on tricking out a Mark II. Kinda like making a silk purse from a sow's ear.

    Good gunsmiths ain't cheap.

Was going with the 93 but have the Lilja and it seems nobody
wants to buy a M2 bbl for their Sako and it's to nice to give away.
In RF barrel and chamber are everything and if done straight
should out shoot almost any HMR out there barring full on jobs.
    I'll find someplace. :'(

    Contact Scott at www.savagegunsmithing.com.

There is much more to gunsmithing than just someone who knows how to run a lathe. Scott is a master gunsmith and does the finest work I've ever seen.

Look for an artical on Scott in Varmit magazine, this months issue.

You can reach Scott at 208-313-1570. Best to call in the AM, he lives in the Mountain time zone, if your in the east, don't call too earily.
9:00 AM MT is a great time.
If he can't do it, it can't be done. You guys should check out his Savage accurizing package for both RF and CF rifles, it's awsome.

    My Best, John
