can you Sabot a center fire bullet?

Hi all, I know you can use pistol bullets for a muzzleloader round. But on CSI Miami Sunday night. they had a sniper and found .223 rounds. later they found Sabots. They said the sniper used them to load .223 rounds in a bigger case. Looked like .308 case to me. The reasons they said it was done so there would be no marks on bullet and can make the round run faster. Just wanted to see if this was true or not. Would be cool to run .223 or 22-250's in my .308 cases..

Yes, I did it 30 years ago with a 30-06 using .224 bullets. Bullet might travel quicker but accuracy went to H.
It can be done but the idea doesn't seem to 'fly'

not the cases, just the bullets. they were off some, they should have been saying .224 bullets. .223 bullets would be .22rf or hornet. not .223 rem cartridges which use .224 bullets


60gr .22 to 300 WM well over 4000FPS. Lucky to hit anything though.

12fv308-Let me put this out first-As a 42 yr LEO/US Army MPI School Distinguished Grad/ Mil Police and State Police Officer for 21.5 yrs- ANY CSI TV show is so far beyond the pale of real police work that it makes Bullcrap look like honey! This all Hollywood BS! FYI-I worked UC in a foreign country under cover for Naval Intelligence(NCIS)-the TV show is puke!
Now for your post- Rem did offer at one time .30 cal sabots carrying .224 bullets @ hyper velocities. I even know of one murder where such a round was used, but "real world invesigation" caught the killer. Velocities in excess of 4000 fps were claimed for some calibers.

I have sabots for 224 diameter bullets in 30 caliber cases. I also have Sabots for 308 diameter bullets in my 460 X510 case.

The 224's aren't getting it done for accuracy but the 180 grain bullets with the 50 cal sabots are doing real well.
