Back to the reloading bench

As the topic implies. With my personal reloading book gone , here we go again. Its been a long time since i have picked up my rifle, nor can i believe that i have let them sit for so long. Thank God for good ol RIGS grease for protecting them for me.The reason for the post is to get back into reloading there has been some changes in powders since the last time i hand pressed a load. There also seems to be alto of new powders on the market as well as a few missing. The Rifles that I would reloading for are A .270win , .308 and a 30-06.

Notes on the rifles
The 30-06 (savage 116) favors a heavier bullet it really like 168 - 180 grain.

the target was of 3 rounds 180 grain Sierra game king @ 200 yards.Primary use hunting.

The 308 ( savage 12bvss ) loves mil surplus 150 grain. At the time i really never got into reloading for because ammo was so cheap for. Certainly no the case now!!!Originally i bought this rifle to shoot in club matches certainly had my fun being the only savage guy.Sadly i no long have the time.

was trying to shoot out the staples that was holding the target 4 rounds again 200 yards

The 270 was just added to the collection its a savage edge supporting a Bushnell 6500 elite Hoping to take care of a few coyotes with it.Just wish it had a longer barrel.

Its seems that the favored Powder is
BlueDot (might be a bit hot for the 270 )
RL19 and RL15
RL17 ( seems to be a good powder in 308 )
RL22 good but not fast
Varget
IMR 4350 / 4064/ 4227
H4227
Win 760

The powder i know i have used and had good luck with win760 the heavy 06 loads. imr4064 and the varget in the 308
After reading 17 or so pages in the forum last night i have some of the pet loads. That where posted. My question for you is most about the reloaders 17. I have not been able to find much info on this powder from some of the data given it might be a choice for the 270/308.

Even the Smokeless Powder Types and Burn Rates http://www.reloadbench.com/burn.html dont reveal any info .Again please bare in minds its been 5+ years since i have picked up a rifle or reloaded.I would lover to hear what powders you like and why. with the lost of the black book i am back to square one. Anyone living in pasco county Florida knowing of a good gun range would be nice manatee gun club is a HIKE but a nice place to shoot. For those of you that made it this far thank you for taking the time to read the post.

Most 06's do like the heavier bullets including mine. Most people get caught up in bullet weight but it is really a Sectional density/Ballistic Coefficient number as it relates to the twist rate. IMO all standardized 1 in 10 twist guns prefer at least a .250 SD/.400 BC bullet which is at least a 210 grain .338, 168 grain .308, 140 grain .284 and .277, 130 grain .264 or 120 grain .257.

The .243/6mm should carry a 1 in 12 twist for most of their bullets and the .22 calibers a 1 in 14 and back in the day they did. Going up or down a couple of twists inches is not going to negatively effect you that bad but will show a preference to particular bullets. Twist is the most expensive part of the tooling process so you can see why it is standardized.

Do you do any reloading if so which powder are you having good results with ? Some of the powders i have used in the past are still around but from research there are a few new powders that do seem like they can be a bit better.

Blue Dot and both IMR and Hodgdon 4227 are very fast powders more suited to handgun loads, some heavy 12 ga loads or 22 Hornet. The other powders listed should work well in your calibers.

Some of the "old" powders that were good before, will still be good now. No reason to think that you have to try every newfangled powder that's brought out.

Win 760 is still good. I use a lot of IMR 4064 and IMR 4350. The 4064 in the lighter weight bullets, and 4350 in the heavy weight bullets. I use the 4064 in a 308 load with a Nosler partition in 165 gr. I use 4350 in the -06 for the same 165 gr and also a 180 partition. I also use IMR 4350 in my 338 win mag, and my 375 H&H. Good versatile powder.

I don't load for or own a 270, so I can't comment on that one. No reason, other than I just don't have one, not knocking the 270.

My buddy is using Varget in some of his 308 match loads, with 155 and 168 gr bullets.

I also use H-380 in my 22-250, H 4831SC in my 6.5x284, and old mil-surp BL-C2 in my 223

I think you will have trouble getting enough RL-22 into your cases to do any good with? I only use that one in my 257 wby mag.
12F, McGowen 6.5x284 1-8" twist, Nightforce 12-42x BR
BVSS, McGowen barrel, 22-250 1-9" twist, Nikon 6-18x
16 FHLSS Weather Warrior, Sinarms 257 Roberts, Pentax 3-9
Stevens 200, 223 bone-factory-stock, Nikon 3-9x
Scratch-built BVSS, LW 243 1-8" twist, Viper 6.5-20x50 mil-dot

Kinda hard to beat Hunter and Magnum for heavy bullets in the 06 case. Hunter has been a very good powder in the 18"/30-06/178 Amax Striker and the 25-06 shooting 115/117grainers. High velocities, clean burning, low SDs and as accurate as the old timers!

Re: Back to the reloading bench

I use all sorts of powders but my big game rifles all use IMR 4350, H4831SC or Rel 22. There are allot of other really good choices but I have found consistent success with these so have not felt pressured to stray. Rel 22 is my favorite and can usually achieve the highest/accurate velocity with it.

Captain Finlander nailed it. It would be time well spent to figure out what rate of twist your gun barrels have and match the bullet to it.
