This has come up a few times. I do believe that both the 6 & 8 screws were used.
EDIT: Yes, they used both 6-48 & 8-40. I’m not sure of the exact year they switched to the 8-40 screws.
I built a 260 on a mdl 10 action I bought. Today I was going to rob the bases off my mdl 16 so I could mount the scope on the mdl 10. The screws were to small, the screws in the 10 action are a #8 instead of a #6 and appear to be a 36 thread. The threads aren't bright and shiny like they were re-drilled and tapped, the finish is dull like the action.
Did Savage use different screw sizes in their actions? My mdl 11, and 16 have #6 screws, I think the 12 does too.
Thanks, Justin

Thanks Dave. I ordered the 8-40 screws today.
the 8-40 screws aren’t to fit your your bases. They will need to be drilled/countersunk properly. Might be better off just getting a new base for this one. Of course, I always recommend a 20MOA,1-piece 7075 Aluminum base. But I’m not sure what rings you use to begin with.
I have a drill press and a mill so I'm good on re drilling the bases.
Thanks, Justin
Just a heads up. If you buy weaver bases and they have 6-48 screws and your rifle requires 8-40 screws Weaver will send you the correct screws, no charge. The lady I spoke to said they were working on a set of bases with 8-40 screws.
