Never Knew My Savage 110 .223 Barrel Was Such a Delicate Thing!

It`s been interesting to learn that the barrel and rifling can withstand hundreds, maybe thousands, of copper jacketed bullets moving at thousands of feet per second, sent on their way by a tremendous explosion generating intense heat. However, let an aluminum cleaning rod get anywhere near them ( maybe an exaggeration, but only a slight one based on my reading ) and everything from the chamber to the crown practically dissolves into a marred, ruined, scarred mess of metal. I never realized that a relatively soft metal such as aluminum could be so destructive of hardened steel. Before this enlightenment, I used an aluminum rod 4-5 times on my new rifle. Hope I haven`t ruined it.

Then I guess I've ruined every barrel on every gun I own since I use an even harder stainless steel cleaning rod's on them.

Don't believe all of the old wives tales you read on the interweb!

    This should be fun!
It’s not the rod per say it the thin layer of oxide that forms on the rod.
The one thing I have learned about shooting and hand loading ammo is that thousandths of an inch can be critical to performance. How performance is defined is also critical.

This is what an aluminum 3 piece cheap rod does to my .223 barrel.

Shoving it from the muzzle to the chamber when I’m too lazy to take the cheek riser off to get the bolt out.

Lol .25” groups. seems like the aluminum rod is ruining my pitted barrel.

I guess so, Dave. like most things in life, I suppose you can find folks coming down on both sides of this issue.

I could "hear" the same disdain for the bass-ackwards thinking of this in your post, that I myself have. Reminds me of the absolute NONSENSE of "following the science" by wearing a mask against the Kung Flu... or getting the jab while being immune to in the first place! I can't stand it.
