    Wood Stocks


    anyone else use Spar Varnish for wood stocks. been using it since my school days when we built wooden water ski's in shop class. prep them well stain a beautiful shade and 3 or 4 coats inside and out waterproof as a ducks you know what! just a thought for the day.

    How did you go about building those water skis?
    Did you actually use them?
    I did lots of water skiing in my young days.
    Had a 54 Mark 55 Merk on back of a 14’ laminated mahogany plywood boat.
    40 horse power, and it was the biggest outboard made at the time.
    Spar varnish was the finish i used on the boat.
    But as i look back, the only thing actually better about those days is that i was a helluva lot younger.

    Amen on i was a lot younger if i remember the teacher had a ski clamp built. we soaked the boards in water etc etc also learned how to weld in 7th grade good old days

    Were they soaked or steamed?
    Much of that type stuff was steamed unless it was done in various layers of wood.

    I've used it on spars. ;-)

    On long-guns I like a rubbed oil finish and then buff on a bowling alley wax coating.

    Tried that Spar is much easier but old hand rubbed stocks are very beautiful
