    Scope ring height recommendations

I know that this has been asked before and I've read most of the other posts, but haven't found a good answer, so here goes.

I have a Model 11 .243 that I am mounting a Vortex Diamondback Tactical FFP 4-16x44mm (30mm) on top of a 0 MOA EGW rail.

(Now for the SMH funny part) - I took the cantilever mount off the AR that the scope was mounted to and mounted it to the Savage. Took a look through the eyepiece and thought, "man, this scope seems HIGH - it's going to be near-impossible to get a decent cheek weld". Well, duh - it's sitting in a cantilever mount that was intended for AR-15 sight pictures, so its OBVIOUSLY going to sit way too high on a bolt gun.

It should be noted that I've never been accused of being an overly bright bulb...

That brings me to the question - I'm trying to decide between low and medium rings for the Savage. I'm thinking that low rings should be just fine, but I know most of the folks here will be able to answer that question pretty quickly.

Here's an easy way to determine required ring height (NOT size--that's determined by the 'scope') on your rifle.. It seems a bit silly and way too simple, but it works on my rifle.. Obviously, be very careful when 'mounting' the scope on the pennies.

Thanks - meant to type height. Changed the title.

That's an interesting approach. Thanks for that.

As bad as I dislike the way it looks. My head position with high/med rings feels better with a raised comb. Kydex cheek risers are on my rifles.

I agree... I like a kydex cheek weld riser as well. So I made a shoulder stock that incorporates a low riser...as my Chassis is inline. Still uses an extra tall scope scope mount from American Defense.

With the standard stock rifles I’ve owned I was fond of Low-Medium rings. Right around 1.000”+/- with scopes using 30mm tube & 50mm objective.

I can tell you what doesn't work well, and that's an AR-15 cantilever mount on a bolt gun...

I can tell you mounting a Diamondback Tactical 6-24 x 50 on a Savage 110 (long action) with an EGW 0 MOA rail the Vortex low rings are fine.

Cool - how much clearance do you have over the barrel?

Hey Brian, are you thinking of Rings, a scope mount with Picatinny rail or 1-piece mount like the Wheeler?

I have an EGW picatinny rail on the Savage and I'm getting some scope rings to replace the single-piece cantilever mount that the scope was riding in on my AR-15. I ordered some Vortex medium rings for it that will come in on Saturday. If it's too high, I'll return them for low.
