I just got my first Savage and I’m embarking on a multi barrel project. The base is a 10 FCP that’s new but a couple years old. It still has the non fluted barrel.

So far I’m very impressed with the flexibility Savage built the rifle with.

The first order of business is pulling together the pieces to switch from a 308 to a 223 bolt face. The barrel is coming from Northland/Shilen about mid summer. Before it arrives I need to convert the bolt and the magazine.

My preference would be to have a complete bolt assembly. The original in 308 and a second with a 223 bolt face. I know where I can go to buy the pieces for the bolt head but....I’m used to switch barrel rifles with switch barrel bolts.

Three question coming from someone who has never worked with a Savage.

1) Am I unnecessarily fretting about firing pin protrusion difference between the two different bolt heads? Having to adjust the firing pin reach would ruin the concept.

2) Is there such a thing as a complete bolt assembly? Numrich may offer that but it’s not in stock and it’s called out as fitting a 10FP and not a FCP.

3) Is the .223 magazine a one for one replacement with the 308 magazine well?

I would greatly appreciate some advice. Bill.
